Hello,
Our TA tells us this is a common practice in Tahiti. We are planning a trip over Christmas and New Years, and the dinners are quite pricey, esp for a family of 5....
Other than changing to a smaller hotel is there any other option? I'm not cheap, but I wince at the thought of paying 290,000 xpf for my 12 yr old to tell me how gross abalone tastes.

I do not know this for a fact...... But I have heard if you contact the hotel and tell them you want to stay at their hotel during the holidays, but you do not want to partake of the mandatory holiday meal, they will wave it. But you will then be on your own to come up with an alternative meal.

QT314, if you are staying at either Tikehau or Manihi Pearl, you really have to eat at their restaurant given that you are on a motu with limited shuttle services over to the mainland for other dining options.
Find out from your TA if you can get half board for free (breakfast and dinner) because all our local deals from Oz are offering complimentary meals through til 2011. That way you will only have to fork out 6000 XPF per person for Xmas and 16000 XPF per person for NYE (yeah, I know, it's still approx $1000 USD extra :(
Also, I think I have Tikehau and Manihi email address if you want to try and email them direct for a specific answer to your dining questions :)

Thanks, we are staying at the Manihi Pearl. An email address would be great, if you don't think it will be impolite to go around my TA.
We are already doing half board, paying 90,000 xpf/day which I don't mind, as I know there aren't many food options in Manihi. It's just the extra holiday fee- can't think of many meals of that cost that my kids have had.
Looking forward to it any which way - just am trying to save up some pearl money as well!

QT314, the email I have for Manihi is:
welcome@manihipearlbeach.pf
They usually take quite a few days to reply. The GM is Henri Valin - a lovely man - and the staff are very friendly and professional.
Also, they have a Pearl shop on site and during our stay they were offering discounts on their pearls because of the "slow economy". The lady that runs the pearl shop is very knowledgable and has any pearl for any occasion.
