Thank you one and all! I'm so excited already I can hardly tell you! lmao I plan to spend most of my time swimming, snorkelling etc, as well as the obligatory sightseeing which I love to do. I'd actually like to go on some of the hikes but I doubt if I can walk that much due to my disability but I may just try it anyway.
Any local foods, drinks etc that should be tried at any cost! lol I rather think I'll be coming home with quite a few pearls too :)

Definitely try Poisson Cru! And any fish with vanille sauce. Breadfruit (called "uru") is sometimes available in restaurants too -- in fries, or mashed like potatoes -- yummy!
Hinano is the local beer, which you will come to know well because it is advertised everywhere! Also try Tahiti Drink, an alcoholic fruit drink sold in milk-type cartons.

we like poisson brochettes which are cooked outside at the roulottes-vans that have cooking facilities. Poisson brochettes are fish kabobs with things such as onion and green pepper.
Also, if you go to Huahine, there is a fresh market everyday where the locals sell fruits, veggies and baked goods. The prices are incredibly reasonable. You can also buy fresh fish.

I thought fish might play a large roll - no pun intended - in Tahiti. Coming from a fishing family I think that I'll fit right in! Thank you folks. :)

If you can't walk long distances, on Huahine you might want to consider staying at Chez Guynette (a hostel-type place). It's right in the heart of Fare, the only town on the island. Everything you'd need is a short walk (plus it would be easy to catch a site-seeing tour from there). Pack your own snorkel and mask (test it at home to make sure it fits and is waterproof). If you have room in your luggage, fins are nice, too, but not necessary if you're a swimmer.

Thank you,Old Wife, that's very helpful. While I'm here, is there anywhere I can buy Tahitian vanilla on line?

For 2-3 weeks visit to Bora Bora, you can check out number of islands. Some of them offer an option to swim and snorkel also. Other options include jet ski, and dramatic sunset cruises. You will really love your stay over there.
