Has anyone any knowledge of this pension? It looks fabulous to me and I'm considering staying there if I choose Huahine to make my base.

Yes,I know it and it is a lovely spot. Here are some things to consider.
It is on the water. It is down a very long ,winding driveway down a side of a "mountain". There wouldn't be much hiking there or interacting with many people there except the owners, unless you drove to different places. I believe that they have a van.
It depends on what you want.
1. Chez Guynette-right in town by the Supermarket. A short walk to a fabulous beach. You can have a private room, but it is more of a hostel place. You can cook or you are right by many eating options.
2. Relais Mahana-on a beautiful beach. a small resort. Eating in the restaurant, or if you have a car, eating in other restaurants. fabulous snorkeling right there and a very long beach to walk on, if you wish.
3. Villas Bougainville-car, boat, house with all facilities, but not on swimmable water because of agricultural run-off. It looks perfectly fine, so unless one knows, you wouldn't be the wiser about the water. Has a kayak avaiable as well and fruits on the grounds that you can pick and eat. Barbecue as well.
4. There is an island by the old Sofitel that has a little place to stay. I forget the name, but you have to go by boat to the "mainland". More Robinson Crusoe type of adventure.
Any other places that you are interested in?
There is also Pension Maurii which some people seem to like. I think they even have a floating house to stay on. The accommodations vary there, so it depends on what you are looking for.
I think that we have seen most of the places to stay there, so any questions, just ask.
There are the Toe Toe Neha (spelling?) places as well. Some people have liked those as well, but you need a car. They might come with a car.

Brilliant, thank you, holte. The further isolation from crowds makes it even more appealing; why did I favour India as a holiday destination before? lol

There's also Rande's Shack. Rande's an American so language isn't an issue. He has two bungalows (a 1-bedroom and a 2-bedroom) that are great (kitchen, bathroom, bedroom(s), living area, washing machine, etc.). It's a nice walk down the beach to Fare (the town/village) and the snorkelling out front of his place is excellent. He's also got bikes you can use for free.

I'll have to find the island spot unless someone knows the name off hand. I'll have to look for it later. If you like the isolation, this might be the best spot for you.
Re Rande's shack. I feel the walk down the beach is somewhat difficult in spots. That is why I didn't mention it. Old Wife, what do you think?
If you like isolation, there is also Huahine camping on the small island. I will look for pics of it on the net, or someone can, since I won't get to it until later. It's on a beautiful beach and there is a communal kitchen. You do not bring a tent. He has some structures that you stay in. He also has the traditional medicinal plants and trees of Polynesia on his property.
But you will have to decide.

That's true. That's why I didn't mention Rande's Shack at the start. It's a longish walk (only about 15 minutes, but sand, rocks and a jump over a creek) so not just a stroll.

Thank you for the info. There's certainly food for thought there, I just don't like tourist traps.

I don't think anything in Huahine is a tourist trap. Having said that, if you need to cash any travellers cheques, head to the Banque Socredo on the road in behind the main road in Fare. There are 2 fancy banks on the main drag and you'll notice they're empty (or mostly empty). That's because the fees at the Banque Socredo are so much cheaper.

Old Wife, I think that you will understand when I say that the term "tourist trap" in relation to Huahine is humorous.
As far as the banks, Socredo is cheaper for travelers checks, but the other bank on the main street at the far end of the street is cheaper to have cash exchanged.
This is how much of a tourist trap Huaine is:
The bank on the main street told my hubby to exchange his travelers checks at Socredo because it's cheaper.
