They told me that, too! The teller leaned in and almost whispered it to me. It really isn't a tourist trap, is it?
And when I headed to Socredo, I didn't know whether I had to stand in a certain line or not so I asked a woman (in French) which line I should get in for cashing travellers cheques and she said either line was fine. So I stood behind her and we waited and waited (because the lines were long). Then the door opened and a guy in a motorcycle helmet walked in and walked to the front of the line and was served and then left. Nobody blinked. I think it was one of those "everyone knows he works at 'x' and is in a hurry so we let him go to the front of the line" type of things.

It's so funny because the natives will sit calmly forever in the bank, but when they get behind the wheel of a car, watch out!
We drive slowly because of all of the dogs, people walking, children, and bike riders, and they are always passing us in areas that don't look like they are passing zones to me.
We always wonder where they are going that they are in such a hurry.

Au Motu Mahare is the little place on the motu near old Sofitel. Maybe the locals like to linger in the bank because there's air conditioning..? :)

Hi Finnano. Are you planning a trip?
We took a boat past Au Motu Mahare. The water around there is so beautiful, but soooo shallow.
We think we saw some rays there. They seem to like that area.
Did you ever go to Au Motu Mahare? It looked like a good place for those that want the Robinson Crusoe experience.
I hate looking at the Old Sofitel falling into ruin. But from the island that Au Motu Mahare is on , the Sofitel doesn't look that bad.
I just remember all of the fabulous times we had there. So sad.

That's the charm of Polynesia, walking in to the bank and being able to tell your life story so to speak while everyone waits behind without comment...
Did you mean Holte or Old Wife the Fare 'Ie in Parea? It has a nice beach lagoon side (east) but is far away from anything, they have tents like one sees in Africa (safari)
I hve stayed at Fare Maeva, ok, clean and self contained bungalows, and pretty close to town (not for walking at night though), Relais Mahana, expensive, in that area I would pick the pension Mauarii which is less expensive and same beach area and Fare te Nahe toe toe which I would not recommend and besides it is the same owner as pension Armelle in Punaauia which filed for bankruptcy 2 months ago (don't know about their Huahine pensions...)

Poehere-Au Motu Mahare is on what we called the coconut island across from the old Sofitel if you are looking at the water. I think you cannot see it from the Sofitel, but have to go around the little point that sticks out on the coconut island.
They did have a website, but I don't have time to look it up right now.
Wow! I think the Fare te Nahe toe toe on Parea were so cute and they are on a fabulous water. But I do not know if you can swim there. They are RIGHT on the road, although being on the road in Huahine hardly matters, in my opinion.
So that is interesting that you do not recommend them.
They also have some in Faiie (sp?)
Fare Maeva -the water is too close to the reef for my interest.
I have seen the tents, but only from the outside. The location in Parea is beautiful. But I think they are a little expensive.

LMAO!!! I suppose that's Tahitian honesty!
I really want to pack my suitcase and head off to Huahine but I can't at the moment, however, the anticipation is as alluring as the trip itself.
