I wish I could be sure and I'm so afraid of hurting the business of the wrong one. The name Ariitere seems closer to what I remember, but Fare Maeva looks closer to my visual memories (the photos of it) and size. And it could be neither. So I really hate to say which it is (if either). Both advertise hot water and both are in the same area that I remember that place being so that doesn't help. The driveway in to the place was well-'treed' so it was hard to get a clear look at the bungalows/rooms, but they were in a row, had flat pads for patios with plastic chairs and were stall-like (not any fancy Polynesian style, but boxy and plain-looking). We didn't see a pool, but that might have been on the other side of the buildings if there was one (though I doubt it). And we never kept in touch with the couple from France so I have nobody to email to ask.

Ooo! I think you're right, Holte! The photo of their beach hut is just what I remember (and one site mentions cold water). So now I'm sure it isn't the 2 other ones I mentioned...I wish I could edit out those names in case anyone comes across them (hopefully they'll read further and see that those aren't the ones I'm commenting on). I think you've found the right one. They're certainly inexpensive, though, so if you know what you're getting, they're a deal.

They have camping, a kind of common place to sleep ( I think), and individual little bungalows (tiny but cute). The view is beautiful, but the reef comes right up to the land practically.
I think for young camper types, it's an OK place for the price. They also had bicycles included but bring your own tools.
Our young friends stayed there for a night and then moved to the Guynette. They had brought tents and didn't like sleeping in the tent. This was several years ago.
Another couple that we met a couple years ago were staying there. It is a beautiful location, but a young people's place.

I think the only thing about the tents that puts me off them is just that - they're tents! I don't mind living in tents but at the price that is being charged for the tents with furniture 'n flooring is that they're still just tents.

The tents looked really hot to me. When you think about the hot sun beating down on them for a good part of the day, you can imagine they'd be hard to go in (and you'd want to be in them if it pours). And I expect they get pretty chilly at night, too, for the same reason (they wouldn't hold the heat the way a bungalow can).

I rather think I'll go for Pension Tupuna. It looks like a decent place on the two web sites they have and since my pub crawling days are well and truly over I quite happy that it's situated in a nice secluded, quiet area - I suppose there are lots of areas like that on Huahine!
Now, do I stay for two weeks or three?...

that's easy to answer for me-three weeks.
We stayed over three weeks once, and it was not long enough, but enough so I wasn't totally devastated like I am when staying a shorter time.
If you stay at Villas Bougainville where you get a car and a boat, the price goes down when you stay more than 15 days. I think it's 15 days.
I really do recommend a car while there and we love the boat. There is so much to enjoy on that island I feel.

I'm actually thinking of stretching it to a month but I have to arrange people to take care of things here and where I live it isn't going to be easy but I'll get it done somehow.
I just read Lonely Planet guide to Tahiti - but it was written in 1997 (the copy I have was, anyway) and it had some information of horror stories from people who rented cars such as thefts etc. Another story related was that of a lady from Huahine who backed into a tourist and caused some damage to the rented car. The lady was so horrified she escorted the holiday couple to the rental company and told them the visitors were not to blame! I might just hire a driver for a day or two lol.
I have also been emailing Jan Prince on Moorea and now I've added Moorea to the visiting list too lol.
