If you do rent a car, whenever you stop, make sure everything is locked in the trunk (don't leave anything out in view).

Kelo, do not worry about driving on Huahine. Just never park by the Super Fare Nui, the grocery store. Our car was hit there, but it turned out fine.
The downtown is very busy, so it's best to park at one end or the other and walk the couple of blocks. Or feet, if you park by the grocery store, but not right by it.
There are dogs and people walking and people on bikes, but there is pretty much one road. They drive speedy, but sometimes in an area you will be the only car for quite awhile.
But of course, a local would certainly appreciate your business. Tupuna has a vehicle and they probably would be happy to drive you around.
And driving is not like in England (the wrong side of the road for Americans)
I don't know how it is in Scotland as I have never been there.

LOL Scotland is the same as south of the border and driving here can be pretty fraught too! lol Wherever I've gone abroad it's always be me who's been the person who 'had' to drive so given that I've driven in Greece more hair shades than I care to admit, I'm used to it. My friends from Corpus Christi hired a car to drive in Ireland (I drove them all over the NE of Scotland) and they found that left turns were sometimes worthy of a vallium or two but they made it home in one piece.
I wish things would progress a tad so I can get the ball rolling but having said that it'll be over before you know it and I'll be planning the next trip.

These days unfortunately you can not leave even a pièce of 10 cfp in the car...!!! Not even on the outer islands!
In Fare a good place to park is at the pharmacy, just around the corner from the grocery store (dirction of the airport) or at the city hall next to the pharmacy.
Kelo you seem to have 3 weeks to stay...? I would not book it all before arriving, just book a couple of nights and then check the places out

Thank you, Poehere and Suki! lol I doubt that I'll book a car at all. I'll probably just hire the Tupuna's owner to take me around the island. It would be easier for me and I'm sure he'd welcome the business. It wouldn't be a problem for me to drive but being so far from home it's not the ideal place to have an accident - thankfully I haven't had any to date but there is always a first time for everything.

With tourism down all over the islands, any more money you can spend (by hiring a driver) is much appreciated. When we stayed at Rande's Shack, Rande mentioned that he isn't allowed to pick up his guests at the airport. He has to match his customers up with a driver so more money goes to the locals. It was pretty cheap (I think 600 CFP/person) and the guy loaded our luggage into the van (hubby helped because he can't just stand by when someone does that). I don't think our driver spoke any English so we got by with our French (not that we really needed to talk to him much, but I like to visit with people, LOL).
We took a 4x4 tour of the island and walked at least once/day into Fare so we didn't have a need for a car, but I'd be tempted to hire a driver instead of driving myself. The part I love about driving around the islands is sightseeing (hubby does, too) so keeping our eyes on the road would be a challenge!
