Love the pics! Thank you for posting the links. It makes me all the more excited to get there and suffer the islands and all that goes with them; I'm sure I'll cope lol. I like the look of Moorea but worry that it might be too touristy - I'll be going in off peak season anyway. I'm not one for package holidays but it appears that the local accommodation would suit me better. Was that the off peak season in the second lot of pics?

We went in November both times so, yes, off-season. Moorea is the most touristy island, but that's far from saying it's crowded. And right now tourism is down so much that it will be even less-crowded (I feel funny even using the word "crowded" when it comes to FP--it really isn't remotely crowded).

We prefer the local accommodations, too. Not that we didn't enjoy the big resorts (they were fun and a treat), but staying in the smaller, local places meant we had a chance to visit with local people, other travelers (vs. 'tourists'), shopped at some local magasins for food, and (most important of all) since it was much cheaper, we were able to stay much longer.

We stayed in resorts the first few times and then discovered the local options when "our" resort closed down.

I loved the resorts, but I love the local places now as that is what we can afford for the longer stays that we crave, being addicts.

We also get some wonderful experiences that we would have never had staying in the resorts.

Crowded is not a term for Polynesia. Except the resorts of Bora Bora make it look crowded.

We love Huahine the most, so far. But, I don't see how you can go wrong with any island. The beauty makes me cry, no matter how many times I see it.

I've done the 'tourist' thing 3 or 4 times until I learned the real way to see places. The best moments so far have been in Goa, India when I stayed with people who became friends and still contact me ten years later. I'd dearly love to do the same in FP. I've been wanting to go to this mysterious place since I first saw 'Mutiny on the Bounty' lol.

Is there anything better than a sipping a Tahitian Mai Tai on an Overwater Bungalow in FP?

Kelo, I think that you will find the same experience in FP. If you are friendly, people are very friendly in FP.

The language can be a barrier, however. Some of the natives speak English. It is funny, because they say how bad their English is, but I have found that it is so good.

It is embarrassing to be an American where knowing a foreign language is not that appreciated in America. Yet, when one travels, many people know several languages. It's such a disadvantage for us.

On Huahine, we go to a little restaurant called Poe Vai in Fare where the owner, Lovina, is teaching us Tahitian. We try to learn a new word a week. That's how bad I am at learning!
