I am planning a trip to Tahiti for my honeymoon this July. We’ve been saving up for this vacation, so I’m trying to do some research before making any reservations. I’ve been reading the posts on this board, and found it very helpful. I noticed that there is not a lot of discussion about the BB Beachcomber. I’m going to be on BB for 3 nights, and am deciding between the beachcomber, sofitel motu, and BBLR. This will be the only place that we’re getting a OWB, so I want to make sure I pick the right place. We’re looking for a place where we can go swimming/snorkeling right by our deck. Anybody have any insight on any of the three places, and where I should stay? How clear/blue is the water at each place, how deep the water is...I'm all ears!

In my opinion, I highly suggest the sofitel motu. Had friends who stayed there, saw it, and nothing bad to say. The rooms are the best, the snorkeling is the best. The decks on the overwaters are the nicest. I stayed at the lagoon resort, and yeah it was nice, but besides the sofitel motu, and the sheraton and hotel bora bora, all the other hotels are nice, BUT 4 stars in my opinion, slightly more weathered, and not as new looking.

I second Anthony. The Sofitel Motu is absolutely awesome. The snorkeling on the backside of the Motu at the Coral gardens is some of the best snorkeling you'll find on the island.

Is the water clearer or nicer at one resort compared with the other? And is it true that there is so much coral under the bungalows at motu that there's no sand at all?
I'm so confused. I've talked to a couple of travel agents, and one of them suggested the motu, and the other the beachcomber.
What to do, what to do...

The water at the Motu is crystal clear...at least it was when we were there. As far as the coral goes...there is a lot of it but not the way you describe. If you don't have coral you don't have much in the way of fish. I found nothing to fault the Motu with...it was perfect.

I'm saying the motu, the sheraton and hotel bora bora are 5 stars and not weathered looking. The rest of the hotels are very nice too, but in my opinion a little bit less new, and more hutlike and polynesian looking. The le meridien, lagoon resort, beachcomber and pearl beach are all very nice, you can't go wrong, but the decks aren't as new, little more weathered. Big deal only if you're as particular as myself.

I'd go for the Motu, but then again I already have. We stayed in an OWB in Nov 2002 and adored it. We didn't get a chance to check out any of the other hotels becuase we were too busy swimming off our OWB, laying out on the deck, snorkeling the coral gardens at the back of the Motu (people pay to take snorkel trips there) and generally enjoying the Motu property. I hope this helps. When we stayed, we did not run into a single person who had anything bad to say about the Motu.
