The general manager of BBPB and I exchanged a couple of emails. He stated that the resort has just undergone extensive renovations ($2.5 million worth), all of their overwater bungalows have been refurbished, redecorated and now are air-conditioned. They've added two exterior jacuzzis one that overlooks the beach and lagoon, and the other overlooking the pool. I've also heard there are a few other projects going on. If the renovation has not been already been completed, it will be by the end of February.
We're going in April and are looking forward to staying there.

Just got back from the Pearl Beach on Friday, the 21st.
It was a major renovation. The place apparently was shut down for a month. All the bungalows have been or are being renovated (when we left, they were still working on a few of the overwaters at one end of one of the piers -- don't know the status of the beach & pool suites). We were in an overwater, and it looked brand new. The decking on the piers leading out to the bungalows was new, too. A/C was added.
The common areas -- restaurants, bars, etc. -- also looked clean and new. The place had the look of a new resort.
Some of the renovations apparently were "behind the scenes." I was told that the pool had a leak (which might explain some of the comments I read some time back about the water level being low). It was fixed and the pool was full and looked beautiful when we were there.

BBVisitor (or anybody who has been to the Pearl since the remodel), Can you provide any more info on your visit? My fiance and I will be going to BB in May and we are booked to stay at the Pearl resort. After I booked everything, I found this message board and was starting to second guess my choice. Right now we are staying in one of the Garden Pool Rooms. How were the OW bungalows? How was the food there? Do you have any suggestions as to activities to do, or things to bring? Just really looking for more information about the Pearl resort, and what it is like and if you would recommend we stay there or go to another resort. Thanks for any input!! I also heard that the OW bungalows might make some people seasick, which scared my fiance to death, is there any truth to that? Was the resort relatively empty, or was it full? Would you suggest meal plans there? Sorry about all the questions, just really looking forward to the trip and want to make sure we are prepared and stay at the right place. Thanks again in advance, George

I didn't stay at the Pearl Beach in Bora Bora(visited Le Meridan instead), but first of all the Pearl resorts are topnotch! We stayed at the PB on Taha'a, as well as Moorea, and truly the bungalows are unsurpassed in style and open airy appeal. The staff at both PB were warm and welcoming. Also, we toured all the resorts on Bora Bora and I think the PB looks fabulous...on returning to Bora Bora it would definitely be one of my choices(Sofitel Motu and Bora Bora Nui as well).
I think the renovation has brought the Bora Bora PB back to the glory of what it must have once been...it certainly looked brand new to us.
By the way, we were just there in mid-FEB.
No worries...I think you'll be very happy.
Also, I acnnot imagine being seasick in an OWB---we definitely weren't.(It doesn't sway or anything)

I absolutely would recommend the place. I saw some of the postings you mentioned, and I didn't see anything like that at the resort. If there was something about the place that made you book it in the first place, I can't think of any reason for you to change your plans.
It's a very beautiful place. It faces east, so you have a wonderful view of the sun & moon coming up over Bora Bora. We were in an OWB that faced east and the sight of the moonlight reflecting off the lagoon with those two mounts on Bora Bora in the background was just unbelievable. You can get the same view from the restaurant. I'm not sure how many other resorts face that direction.
You might want to think about changing to an Over Water Bungalow. I peeked into one of the Pool Bungalows when we first got there. They hadn't finished fixing them up, but I got an idea of what they're like. They're roomy, well laid out, and have a neat "garden," where you can stretch out in total privacy. They seemed very nice. My thinking, though, is that you don't go to a place like this to shut yourself in. We greatly enjoyed sitting out on our OWB deck, watching manta rays swim by, sipping wine, walking about ten steps to get into the water, etc. It's not as private as the Pool Bungalows--after all, putting a wall completely around an OWB would pretty much defeat the purpose -- but we never had the feeling that someone was intruding on us. It was also great fun opening the glass-topped coffee table and feeding the fish at night. We had a school of mullets that seemed to hang out under our bungalow at night, plus a bunch of other fish.
The food was very good, but we weren't on a meal plan. We wanted to get out and try other places and not be tied down to one place. The main restaurant faces the lagoon, has open sides and a great view, and when we ate there we kept saying to each other "this is really, really nice."
There's an activities desk at the resort that can sign you up for things, plus they have a pamphlet describing many of the things available in the area. There's a dive shop right next to the resort, plus a catamaran (sp?)at the resort's dock that goes out on morning, afternoon, and evening cruises/snorkle tours of the lagoon. We took the morning cruise and enjoyed it. The captain jumps in the water with you and leads you around. One word of warning -- if you're not a good swimmer, tell him in advance that you'll stick around the boat. I went a LONG way with him. One thing we enjoyed was renting a mini-car on the main island and taking a lap around it(it cost about $80 for 4 hours and looked and drove like a bumper car at an amusement park, but was great fun).
There are people who have posted multi-page lists of things to bring. Don't worry about it. Pack as much or as light as you want. We had a few pairs of shorts & tee-shirts, plus some nicer clothes for the evening (slacks & polo shirts for me). It was plenty. The resort has umbrellas if it should rain (It's the tropics and we were there in the rainy season. It rained a number of days, but they were usually the it's raining, 10 minutes later it's beautiful type of rains). Oh yeah -- a couple of bathing suits and a hat. Anything beyond that, it's up to you. One thing I would suggest is picking up sunblock and bug spray before you leave. It's MUCH cheaper here. We didn't really need the bug spray and brought it all back, but it doesn't take up much room and is worth tossing in.
I can't imagine anyone getting seasick in an OWB. They're on four sturdy pilings and, although there were some times when there was a fairly brisk wind, we never felt the thing move at all. The walkway out is also solid. It's a non-issue.
We got there as it was reopening, so it was fairly empty, but filling up when we left. Can't offer much guidance there. But, it's not the sort of place where you're likely to have people falling on top of you. It only has 80 or so bungalows and there's a lot of room.
One last thought-- don't get hung up on picking the "right" place. If you go there (or anywhere else) worrying about whether it was the "right" place, you'll probably have a miserable time. You'll get upset over things like the pool table behind the bar had two 6 balls and no 7 ball (or something like that). You can find something to be upset about anywhere. It's a very nice place. Don't worry, be happy, and enjoy yourself.
