Holte, you still can, Hawaiki Nui has a couple of cabins, (Veanu is no more) and Taporo doesn't take tourists. You can reserve by paying at the dock but would have to do that in advance. Security regulations means that in the past they took too many passengers on the "pont" main deck outside and cheapest way to go but these days they randomly check the number of passengers as allowed in view of emergency (life saving) equipment etc and the fines are very high!

Ah cool - So it's still possible to get the Hawaiki Nui ferry, but space is very limited?

If I understand you correctly, it is possible to reserve a cabin, but you have to do that at the dock?

Thanks

Poehere, that's good news, especially about the safety issues. I didn't know that. I know that people used to sleep on the deck.

My hubby thought that was a great idea. I asked him, "But what about the rain?" He figures that if other people can do it, so can we. Hm.

Dom, you can do that at the dock in Papeete (Motu Uta = where the ships dock) because you have to pay (no payment no resa, they only take 12 pax on the deck and have 3 cabins) you can try emailing them but I doubt they'll reply... sarlstim@mail.pf
It deps Papeete 2 times a week, Tuesday and Thursday. Cabin is around 5000 cfp one way, le pont 1300 cfp

It has a cover though Holte, don't worry about the rain... security is good thing too, in the past they would at times "overload"

I like the 1300cfp price and cover for the rain.

Maybe someday we'll try it when we are there longer. Soon, I hope!

As Maupiti is a small island, there are not many accommodation options to choose from. The options that are available are penison papahani and kuriri village.
