Hi everyone,
My girlfriend and I have plans to visit Fiji and the Cook Islands at the end of a round the world backpacking trip.
We really want to visit Tahiti so I've been doing a lot of research into how to do this on a Backpackers budget and have found lots of very useful info on this site, esp regarding the ferry/cargo ship from Pepetee to Bora Bora.
We want to visit Pepetee, Moorea, Bora Bora and Maupiti. There seem to be low end accomodation options at all but Maupiti.
Does anyone know off any dorm style accomodationon this island or even somewhere that offers camping?
Any advice greatly appreciated Cheers, Dom

I think most people like to stay on Maupiti for a day. Maybe it's different for you. I don't know of accommodations (except there are). I hope someone more knowledgeable responds.

Maupiti does not have any expensive resorts; the only accomodations are family-owned pensions or guesthouses. Check this website for more options: http://www.haere-mai.pf/index.php?page=liste&lg=fr&ile=15
Also, for more budget suggestions in FP, check this blog -- it's got excellent information! http://tahitionabudget.blogspot.com
Hope this helps!

Hi Dom, FYI at this time there is no longer a fast vessel to the Society islands (BB) only inter islands small cargo ships that in view of new security regulations put in place are pretty reluctant to take on tourists as passengers. Cheapest accom maybe "Maupiti Village", no camping, no dormitory

Thanks for the link Barbi!
There's this place for 4000 with camping and half board: http://www.tahitiguide.com/@en-us/directory/details.asp?filter_1=&office=1909 I think they have property on the motu where you can rough camp.
Here's another camping possibity which is on the motu: http://www.thetahititraveler.com/touristinfo/lodgingdetail.asp?hotelid=115

Thank you so much for all your responses.
I spent all day yesterday researching this and have seen some of the links posted here. I've alos found this one - http://www.lonelyplanet.com/shop_pickandmix/free_chapters/tahiti-polynesia-8-maupiti.pdf Which shows some budget accommodation options - Looks like we will be able to come here after all!
That sucks about the ferry option - So flying is the only way? Is this best booked in advance or is it just as easy to turn up and get one of the island passes and is it cheaper to fly on certain days? The two ferries I've seen mentioned are the HAWAIKI-NUI and VAEANU - have these both stopped?
Thanks again for your help :)

Dom, You can also take the Maupiti Express ferry between Bora Bora and Maupiti. But the airfare from Tahiti to BB is expensive! If you will be visiting several islands, check out the Air Pass options on Air Tahiti, which are cheaper than buying individual flights.
Both the Hawaiki Nui and Vaeanu are cargo ships, and as Poehere mentioned, after new security regulations last year, they are reluctant to take tourists as passengers. Still, you may be able to find some transport from the Papeete waterfront once you get there and ask around; it's chancey, though.

Dom,
You might also want to consider camping on Moorea at either Moorea Camping or Nelson Camping -- both nice campgrounds on a sandy white beach located within walking distance to groceries and shops.

Dang! I didn't know that the security was placed last year as I know many people would take those cargo boats to get around cheaply. Hubby and I wanted to try it as well. They sounded like an interesting FP adventure.
The Air Pass is a good idea. Just know that you cannot make any changes on it. What you purchase is what you get, is my understanding.
You cannot make a change where you stay longer on one island and then shorter on the other.
Is that correct?
