It really depends on what 'style' you want to do. Will you be eating all of your meals in restaurants or at your resort or will you be going to the magasins to buy food to make your own (when we stayed in resorts, we ate one meal/day--usually dinner--at restaurants which varied in price and ate breakfast and lunch from grocery supplies to keep costs down and when we stayed in pensions we cooked more when possible)? So if you let us know what you plans are that way, it would help. And if you want to eat in restaurants, are you going for fine dining or will a budget-type place be okay (including roulottes)? Edited to add that breakfasts at the resorts are very expensive, but can often tide you over right until dinner! See if your travel agent can get some meals included in your price if you're staying at a resort (especially breakfast since leaving a resort just to get breakfast can be inconvenient).

We took our own liquor with us (we picked it up at the duty-free on our last leg to Tahiti) since liquor is generally expensive there and mixed drinks are very expensive, in my opinion (I seem to recall 1500XPF/drink being normal at resorts).

Half-day tours were (I think) about 4000 to 5000 XPF/person when we were there (depending on the tour). We didn't do any full-day tours or see any shows.

What kind of souvenirs do you want? I brought back pareos for my female relatives and they were 1000 to 2000 XPF for the ones I bought (you can spend more!). I found a t-shirt for my son for about 1500 XPF.

It will proabably be restaurants, bars and cafes

souvenirs of wood

Guess it's difficult to say ...

I'm thinking around 15000 XPF pr day ? I guess if I don't go on sighseeing trips each day, it will work...

I don't know what wooden souvenirs cost (and make sure you buy locally-made ones...I don't think they're common, though).

I would think 15000 XPF per day for one person is good. We could certainly manage on much less, but we don't use restaurants as much as many people do.

I can't remember how long you're going for, but you really don't need a tour every day (unless you're only there for a very few days and want to see a lot of things). Remind me again...which islands and for how many days? Do make sure you do a shark and/or ray feeding and a land/island tour somewhere (we really enjoyed the one on Moorea). Our Huahine island tour was on a very rainy day so it wasn't as enjoyable due to that, but it had some very different sites from Moorea so doing one on each of those island would be well worth it (if you're going to both of those islands). We skipped the Bora Bora land/island tour and did a circle-island water tour that had shark and ray feeding and it was very memorable!

Thanx

I'm going to Moorea and Tahiti only in French Polynesia. 5 days on Moorea and 3 days on Tahiti.

( I am also going to Rarotonga and Aitutaki in the Cook islands and Upolu in Samoa )

Well 2 trips (one 4x4 on the island and a shark and ray feeding or just ray-feeding if that's all that's offered) should give you a really great exposure to Moorea. I haven't stayed long on Tahiti so I've no idea what tours there are there (or which are good). If you book directly with the tour company, you'll save money, too.

Hi Morty, we were in FP for 3 weeks last year and managed to spend $3000 AUD!!! I think our VISA statement consisted of Tahiti Drink, Tahitian Rum, diving, t-shirts, shorts, coloured shot glasses, placemats, coasters, more Tahiti drink and a tour with Patrick on BB.

Oh, diving and tattoos were also in there. Both are not real cheap, but we always get the half board meal plan so we can just walk to breakfast and dinner, so that's pre-paid.

15,000 cfp a day is pretty good Morty.
Average excursions are aroun 6000 cfp and would be too tiring to do every day IMHO... lol

Drinking out: average price is around 500 cfp like a glas of wine, beer, softdrink (not including cocktails which are ridiculous expensive and the so called happy hours will give you half the dose...)
There is a big difference in price between places (like most hotels and resorts) that are exonerated from tax on alcohol...

Food: for lunch you can buy great French sandwiches for around 300 cfp at snacks or even in some supermarkets where they sell them. A hamburger/frites will be around 750 - 1000 cfp, poisson crue (raw fish, very delicious local speciality) around 1500
Lunch in a restaurant will set you back around 2000 cfp for a regular plate, excl. drinks
Diner: Moorea and Tahiti have both a lot of roulottes, diners, that set up after 6 pm (normally they are not allowed to serve alcohol...) you can get steak/fries or chow mein for 1000 cfp
restaurant: of course depends which one but average is around 3000 cfp for tournedos or fish dish, 1000 for dessert and between 1500 and 2000 for appetizer. Bottle of wine in a resto from around 3000 cfp upwards (again depending where)

Supermarket: french bread is 51 cfp, butter around 300, cheese 500, softdrinks around 100/can, beer 200 to 250/can (depending on which island) wine from around 1000 cfp upwards, whiskey from 3000 upwards.

Public bus in Moorea is 300 cfp one way, in Tahiti around 130 cfp one way depending on destination (all the way to Tahiti iti is 450 cfp)

Souvenirs... lots of stuff made in Filipines or Bali so check that out when purchasing if you want original stuff from FP, nowadays you can get really nice handmade jewelry with a black pearl from as little as 1000 cfp, always nice as a souvenir. A locally woven basket 1200 cfp, wooden and bone sculptured items from the islands (Marquises) quite expensive but depends what you're looking for. T-shirts and pareo's between 1000 cfp and 7000 cfp.
