The "latest" minister of tourism has been having talks with Hawaiian air to increase flights... opening up the skies... and Cost&Co is opening up in Tahiti (Arue), do they sell tickets at all??? Maybe us too can then have reasonable rates for a change LOL

I know we are mostly complaining about ATN's stupid 4-5 day sales here.....but the biggest problem in all of this is the constant changes in government in FP. They have to stabilize and set forth a realistic plan for tourism in FP. Not the stupid one based on millionaires coming!!!
It seems the left-hand not only doesn't know (or care) what the right-hand is doing...those hands change bodies every few months!!! That is no way to run a successful tourism program!!!

On the other hand, I can't bitch too much about ATN and FP Tourism not having their act together. If tourism increases too much, next thing you know it will be Mexico.
So we get hosed on the flight a bit. At least everyone here knows how to make Tahiti affordable for us (Barb is queen at that lol). Let the majority spend $$$ on a short trip and come back telling their friends how uber-expensive it was.

But why get hosed? I like French Polynesia because there are always new islands with beautiful lagoons that I can visit.
However, if you haven't been to Rarotonga or Aitutaki then now is the time to do it. It's not Hawaii, it's easy, they want tourists and if you friend Air New Zealand on facebook you will get $100.00 off the airfare. (Yes one airline gives you $100 and the other deletes customer posts.)

As much as we love FP, we're planning our next trip to the Cooks. All kinds of package deals to NZ+Cooks. Silvanocat, thanks for the ANZ Facebook tip!

My first South Pacific trip was to the Cook Islands, it is a great destination. Aitutaki is beautiful. I'd go again if I could get there easily, but since there are not any flights from Hawaii to the Cooks I started going to Tahiti on Hawaiian Airlines.
If people do go to the Cook Islands please look at The Esther Honey foundation if you are an animal lover (seems many here are) they are a volunteer group that provides vet care. They often need supplies brought down. Joan

I am in the Cooks right now, on Rarotonga, and leaving for Aitutaki tomorrow. We planned this break in the middle of our two-month stay on Moorea because the French Consulate visa requirements had gotten so expensive for us, and we thought we could avoid them by leaving FP for a short stay in the Cooks. (It turned out that the law changed and we didn't need the visa after all for a 2-month stay, but that's off-topic...).
Anyway, the Cooks are lovely! It's not FP, but it's similar -- so far Raro is nicer than Tahiti, and we expect Aitutaki to be as pretty as Moorea. And the people are friendly, the money exchange is BENEFICIAL for the U$D, and accomodations are reasonably priced. I've heard the airfare is much cheaper too, for a longer journey. (We flew here from Papeete and will return to Papeete, so we didn't originate in LAX for this trip.)
I just saw this post and can't believe ATN is pushing the 4-day sale again! And Patti and Joe have been "banned" from their FB page??? What a way to run an airline...
Start looking at the Cooks as an alternative!
Joan, I became familiar with the Esther Honey Foundation once we got here, and am making a donation while I'm here. Great group of people! If we ever come back, I'll definitely be bringing some supplies for them.

Barbi, where are you staying? And I assume the internet connection is much better than on Moorea? Aitutaki. Lagoon reminds me of Bora Bora.
