Hello all. Getting ready here for our honeymoon in just over 2 weeks. I've been reading the forums here religiously the past couple weeks and have a few questions on exchanging currency after reading multiple posts.

1. Are the current rates in faaa what can be found in the currency converters? I found a post about someone getting a great exchange rate from AMEX and they just gave me $1 = 72xpf which is horrible as of now.

2. Do you receive a better exchange rate with travelers checks vs. cash? Maybe it was the way it was worded but I have read mixed posts on which gives you the better rate.

Today's published rates are: US$ cash 93,79 versus TC 92,88
Don't change at the hotels as their rates are terrible.

The consumer exchange rate at Faaa Airport is 4 to 5 points lower than the bank-to-bank rate you see published on xe.com. Yesterday it was 86-87 cpf to $1USD. However, the rate at the PPT airport is better than any rate you can normally get from home before you leave. Traveler's checks usually bring 1f more per dollar.

So, it sounds like the best scenario is to get travelers checks at home, then convert them at PPT? Is that right?

Any advice on this is appreciated!

Don't know about TC but it is safer in any case than walking around with a lot of cash... also the banks charge each time you change...

The agent at the airport is the banque de polynésie, you can check their rates here: http://www.sg-bdp.pf/change/frame.html
look under "achat", sorry I published the wrong one yesterday
hope this helps (that's the rate we pay when buying $$$)

We take travellers' cheques to FP because we can't count on the ATMs to work properly (sometimes they work, sometimes they don't and we can't chance it). Travellers' cheques are safe (we don't want to carry all the money we need to spend in cash so we don't cash them all in at the airport--just a week's worth or so) and they are fairly easy to cash at banks. Yes, there's a fee, but if you're out on one of the islands, you can often shop around to find out which bank is the cheapest (we found that the Banque Socredo on Huahine was way cheaper than the other 2 available, for instance).

The airport bank generally has the cheapest exchange fee (flat rate of about $5-$6 for any amount, so better to cash in more than less). Today's xe.com is 90 and the airport bank was 86 a few days ago.

Yes, travelers checks are the best idea, but difficult to cash anywhere except at the bank.
