O Tahiti Nui freedom is a project initiated by Hiria Ottino (Moorea) tracing (in reverse way) in appr. 6 months by means of a "home" built traditional piroque (canoe) the migration of Asian people that started around 6000 years ago to FP. The canoe left Tahiti last week and the crew is aiming to arrive in Shanghai at the closure of the world expo.

Wow, I wonder if this was the boat we saw being built back in late 2007 on Cooks Bay (sort of near the north-west corner of Cooks Bay)? A young woman was carving this huge wooden boat using traditional methods and we stopped to talk with her. She mentioned the man she was working for, but I don't remember his name (she kept saying he was the one building it).

Hmmm OW I think that may have been Francis Cowan's -rip- (well known Polynésian navigator) and Matahi Brightwell's (wood sculpter) canoe, the Hawaiki Nui-2???

The OTahitiNui was constructed over a period of about 4 months in Faa'a (Tahiti)

I know exactly what boat you're talking about Tracy. We went up to that site to check it out too. But I don't think this is the same one.

Thanks, Poehere and Patti. The woman called it a "war canoe" so I didn't think it was the same, but I wasn't sure how many people made traditional boats there.

"O Tahiti Nui Freedom" outrigger canoe arrived in the Cook Islands and needs some repairs before sailing on. Hiria Ottino is the son of MariMari Kellum of Moorea.
