Poehere - LOL! I told you I really wanted to get lost on an island/atoll, anything! Ok, if Anaa is too much, maybe Ahe? Takaroa? Akiaki? Kaukura? LOLOL! ;0) I still have to "sell" Anaa to my better half..and maybe to myself too! Do you know how is Motu Paahi in BB after the cyclone? I heard that the Pension Le Paradis is still closed and I have conflicting information about Pension Blue Heaven Island. Is the motu very "mangled"?
Carrie - That's too bad :0( We would have liked to go earlier but we want to be there on our anniversary on June 27, otherwise, we most likely would have bumped into you guys! Since you've been to Le Tahaa, Vahine should be a great alternative. With specials at Le Tahaa (4th night free), it makes it very attractive...

Andie, have a look at Mataiva... it is a small "particular" atoll in the sense that it's lagoon is composed of more than 70 natural ponds. It lies west from Tikehau and is less expensive to fly to than Anaa.
ps they have no more bread on Anaa, the one and only baker has stopped its activities... lol

Wow, what a neat-looking lagoon. Do you know if the water changes over with the tides (in other words, is the water kept fresh or does it go stale and smell?).

Poehere - Funny you should proposed this atoll. I have looked at this one for a while, but wasn't sure about the pensions there. I couldn't find one with pictures so I was a bit hesitant. Mataiva means 9 eyes but I see more than 9!! Do you know any of the pensions there?

I guess I'll scratch Anaa from my list...If there's no bread, I'm not going!

Hi Andie,
I stayed at both Le Taha'a and Vahine when I was last there in 2008. I stayed in an OWB at both hotels (the Bora Bora View at Le Taha'a). Both places have beautiful rooms and beautiful settings but I'll give you my opinions on the two.
Vahine is a much smaller place and has a much more intimate feel. Le Taha'a is bigger and feels more like a resort.
Vahine has delicious food - truly gourmet, more tasty than Le Taha'a.
The small crowd at Vahine is mostly European, especially French which I preferred. The crowd at Le Taha'a was much more American (and not the down-to-earth type) - not overly friendly and in some cases snooty and obnoxious.
The staff at both places were pleasant but at Vahine, I was made to feel more like a member of the extended family.
Although there is really nothing more than sand around the OWB at both places there is easy access to snorkeling at both places. The snorkeling in the coral gardens adjacent to Le Taha'a was better than the snorkeling in the channel adjacent to Vahine but neither would disappoint.
As far as the rooms, Vahine was a bit more rustic with some high-end touches while Le Taha'a was more luxurious. However, Le Taha'a had one of the hardest beds I've ever slept on anywhere in the world. Maybe I just got unlucky and ended up with an old mattress? There was no A/C in the rooms at Vahine but with the ceiling fan, I didn't miss it when I was there in September.
Personally, if I was going back and had to choose between the two, I would choose Vahine - but that is just my opinion. Whichever you choose, I don't think you would be disappointed.

Wow, that's a great review, islandboyatheart. I know where I would go after that (Vahine, like you!). Mind you, I prefer the smaller, more-intimate places anyway.

Thanks Islandboy! That's what I was looking for. Sounds like Vahine would be my cup of coconut milk.
What I liked about Le Taha'a is mostly the views of BB and that mini motu you see on the picture; it looks like heaven! Although Vahine is a little further and on the opposite side, it still looks like you get good views of BB too.
