I have an email in to the French Consulate in Chicago which is our location to go to, but they have not responded.
We plan on spending up to 5 months on Huahine this year and we need transportation.
I have emailed the car rentals on Huahine with no luck to find out how much it costs to rent a car. Does anyone have any ball park idea?
Another option is to buy a scooter or a junker car. How does the insurance work and about how much would it be?
How about if I shipped my 10 year old Honda Civic to FP? Is there an import tax even though we have no intention of selling it there? How about shipping? How can I find out how much it would cost?
My last question is about the visa. My hubby is going to go a couple of months ahead of me. He may come home from FP and then go with me when I go.
He would be staying a month, then come home for 2 months, and then return for the ninety days. Does he have to get a five month visa or is he ok going for a month, skipping 2 months, and then going back for 90 days?

Ballpark car rental 2000 to 2500 US for 5 weeks
Car insurance on my 1990 Subaru cost me 33000 this year. We have had no accidents or claims so they start out at a higher figure say 40000 then reduce it each year by 10% for several years
Shipping a car would cost approx $ 3000-3500 US then you would have to pay duty and what in the h--- would you do for parts if needed. You will be better off renting. If it breaks down they will give you another car or fix it.
Your last question I suggest you talk with the Consulate.
email me at hamara@harbornet.com if you have any other questions

Thanks for the info.
Did you mean $2000 US for 5 weeks or 5 months? My hubby will be there for 5 months, possibly.
For car insurance, did you mean $330? I hope it wasn't $33,000? I hope you were thinking in CFP's.
Might be bicycles for us.

Will you absolutely need a car every single day? You might consider just renting a car once a week to do the shopping and business and then do with a bike the rest of the time.

I was thinking the same, Patti, plus maybe hiring a driver for shorter trips like groceries (one of you just goes to pick them up & return--I'm sure that's cheaper than a day's car rental) and then rent the car for the days you want to drive around the island or head to the south end for the beach and/or a meal.

Exactly. If you are not going to be needing a car 24/7 for the entire 5 months, then why pay to have one. Rent it as needed. I think it will end up being MUCH cheaper in the long run.
OR....have you thought about staying at one of the places that includes a car???....or do you have a place to stay.

Car insurance for my 1990 Subaru is about $330.00 US per year
I'm checking thru our caretaker about a 5 month rental. Will post later the answer I get.

We can get a deal on staying at a place with a car, but alas, for us, it's not enough of a deal. It's a fabulous deal, so it's too bad we can't afford it.
We like to go snorkeling and swimming EVERYDAY, so unless we can get a place on the beach, I'm not sure what we will do for our snorkeling and swimming obsession.
Hubby is house sitting for a month there (not on the beach but a car may come with it. Not sure.)
He can retire at anytime. Me-I'm still in the salt mine until maybe Feb. Nice of me to let him go to FP by himself, isn't it!!! But it's too great of an opportunity to pass up.
He can look for housing while he's there. I have given him strict instructions, but he's a person who will stay in a seedy motel; it doesn't bother him, so I'm a little concerned.
There are a lot of houses for rent there. And who knows. Maybe the stock market will take a great big turn up, and we can afford a place with a car.
That is an idea , though, about renting a car once a week to do grocery shopping if we are on a beach, but we do have plans on doing social stuff which a vehicle would facilitate.
Lounging on the beach is good for about three weeks, and then we have to become a little more productive.

Holte, you (your husband) may want to consider indeed to buy a "wreck" lol. Sometimes you can find small cars like fiat panda for around 150,000 to 200,000 cfp, (especially now with so many people without a job and in need of $$$) Insuring for a first timer in FP would be around 60.000 cfp for a year but you can take insurance for 6 months or even 3 month also.
Only (minor) prob would be the administrative side, meaning when buying the car you'd have to get the so-called grey card to be put in your name (waiver for the previous owner and proof of ownership new owner) in order to be able to get insurance as well as pay tax stamps. On the outer islands this is done at the gendarmerie. I am sure since all of your trips you'll know of someone locally who may be able to help in translating.
Scooter is also a (cheaper) idea but... car would be safer. When leaving you could prob easily sell the car again as transportation from Tahiti is expensive so teachers and hotel people moving to Huahine and locals living there prefer to buy on the island itself when possible.
www.paruvendu.pf (small adds) or the boards at the supermarket etc. great place to find good deals.
Let me know if you want more info.
