My wife and I are staying at the Bora Bora Hilton Nui, December 5 through 11, 2010. It is our first trip to the South Pacific. My wife is a non-diver. I am an ex-dive-instructor, with over thirty years of diving and more than 1,400 dives. We are retired in Key Largo, Florida, USA.

I would appreciate any suggestions, recommendations, information and referrals. I know nothing about this area. I am planning on only one or two dives, and I suspect it is probably better to leave my gear at home and rent.

Sincerely,
Marty

Hi Martin and welcome to the forum. Most dives are twin tank dives so you can get 2 dives in on one day.

There is a good dive site with Eagle Rays straight across from your resort. The site is called Toopua (which is the name of the motu that your resort is on). My favorite dive on Bora Bora is Muri Muri, which is on the outside of the reef adjacent to the airport.

Any dive operation will pick you up from your resort. I usually dive with Giles at Blue Nui, which is based at the Pearl resort. They have good hire gear so you won't need to take your own, but make sure you have your dive credentials, as you can take an extra 5kg of luggage on the plane if you are a diver. They use steel tanks, not aluminium, so that will affect how much weight you carry. My rule of thumb is what ever you carry in kg with an aluminium tank, you take in lb with a steel tank.

You can contact Giles and Wendy at Blue Nui Dive via e-mail at
