I am going crazy about getting a visa for FP. I have emailed the French consulate in Chicago twice now with no response.
Have other people emailed their consulates or called on the phone?

Holte, How long are you planning on staying? You no longer need a visa for a stay of up to 90 days within a six month period. Email me too and I can send you the details of the new law, which took effect in January. BarbiJKM@aol.com

Holte, You won't need a visa for a two-months stay, but hubby will need one for a 5-month stay. My experience with the consulate is that they do NOT respond to email questions if they feel the information is already set out on their webpage. And phone calls just get a recording... Frustrating, I know!

It is correct. I got the same problem. No response at all. I think it need to go directly to the office and need to inquire to officials.

If you go to the office, can you ask them if a person can get a 5 year visa and also ask them if the translations have to be certified French translations? Thanks

Holte, To get a 5-year "visa," you will be applying for a Carte de Sejour -- Right now, the long-stay visa for Americans is good only for up to 12 months maximum. Hamara can help with more information about the carte de sejour, which is pretty much a part-time resident status, with LOTS of red tape to acquire.
It's a pain to have to go through the whole visa process every year, which we used to have to do for many years for any stay over 30 days. Thankfully, that's now been increased to 90 days in a 6-month period. And they don't seem to give you any breaks for already having the same visa the prior year -- they require ALL documents and the in-person appointment all over again!
