HI everyone. Just looking for more info on the Hilton Nui and information on climbing the trail leading up Mt. otemanu. We have reserved in advance Delux OWB # 105 with a view through the inslet of Mt. otemanu, just looking for some general tips while were there.
We really want to climb the Mt. Otemanu trail (not sure if thats what the trail is called?). I saw a video on youtube of two couples doing it and it is a MUST DO in my opinion. But I have no idea where to go to find the trail entrance, any info would be greatly appreciated. We have our meals included already and not really wanting to go on a bunch of excursions, just relax and a Mt.O climb ;) with lots of snorkeling and soaking up the sun!
I've been doing tons of research, i hear I should go shop at Chin lee's store for snacks and alchol. Is this correct? Do i just tell them I want to go to Chin Lee's or how do i find this place also?
Also where should I buy duty free liquor before I get there? At the LA airport?
We are so excited, for the past 10+ years i've always dreamed of getting married and going on my Honeymoon to Bora Bora and just needed to find the perfect wife before I set out on this adventure, were getting married on Sept 25th in Gatlinburg Tennessee in the Great Smokey mountains and then heading to Bora Bora Sept 26th, I can't even describe how freaking estatic I am. I actually had a dream last night we arrived in Papeeti (SP?) Airport and were waiting on our flight to bora Bora. Ok as you all can see i'm rambling with excitement, any and every tip/suggestion is appreciated! Thanks in advance and i'll be sure to take TONS of photos to share!!!
Jimmy & Julie!

I'm also interested in information on the hiking! I think I saw the same YouTube video as you with the two couples climbing the trail - weren't the views from the top amazing? I'd love to see that in real life!
Congratulations on finding the perfect wife for you and your wedding! Very exciting. My husband and I are going on 9/22 for our 4th anniversary and may be in Bora Bora when you are! We're staying at the Sofitel Motu though. The Nui looks like a great property, I'm glad for you that you got a bungalow that still has a view of Mt. O - that was my only beef with that property, most of the bungalows have a view of just ocean.
I've very very excited too and pretty much talk about it, read about it, look at videos, or look at pictures non stop. Have fun!

YES the VIEWS are amazing in that video and i'm imagining even more amazing in person. Thats why it is a MUST DO for me!!! It's just breathtaking! Plus the climb looks like some fun and a bit challenging but if they did it, we will have no problem!! I was curious in that video why the two women did not go to the tippy top for the 360 degree views, I told my fiance no matter if I had to put her on my back that i'd be taking her up to the top for that view. She's pretty athletic and i'm a former U.S Marine so it should be a piece of cake ;)Definately looking forward to it, now I just have to find the entrance lol.
Yah I was going to book at 4 season but didn;t want to pay the extra price, but I needed/wanted the Mt. otemanu view from our DOWB so the Hilton said they would love to accomodate us and will reserve DOWB #105 for us for those dates, I so hope they do or i'll be the one having a beef with the resort lol because thats been the "Dream" of waking up and staring at the mountain in awe with those crystal clear waters. It also looks like the Hilton has some good snorkeling. Basically I figure anywhere in bora Bora is going to be amazing though. We will be in BB from 9/26/10 - 10/2/2010 leaving that saturday evening :(
We are the same way as you just always lookig at pictures, day dreaming at work haha, and watching video's. W
Will this be your first time in Bora Bora? Congrats on your 4th anniversary, were looking at coming back to BB every 5 year anniversary, maybe sooner if we can afford it, see I haven;t been and i'm already taking about going back lol.

Yes this will be our first time in Bora Bora. We're going to a few other islands first and then we'll be in Bora Bora 10/1-10/4, so maybe we'll see you on the top of the mountain. :)
Everyone on these boards says you get the French Polynesia Flu when you go and you'll always want to go back!

Ia Ora Na, It may look tempting to go hiking on the Pahia and Otemanu mountain but I would definitely advise you NOT to do so without a guide (a while a go a tourist tempted do to it by himself and he was found 3 days later, dehydrated and with a broken leg). The smaller mountain, Pahia, takes appr. 5 hrs...
Azdine is one of the hiking guides, who will tell about the legends and myths while hiking. Try emailing him at polynesiaislandtours@mail.pf
Behind the Bloody Mary's restaurant is a short trail going up the mountain with a nice view as well as across from the (closed) Club Med. Both can easily be done without a guide when driving around the island but always take lots of water and put a hat on.
J&J, maybe for the better you booked the BBNui, FS has changed their shuttle boat schedule and now only runs 2 x a day to Vaitape, the main village, 1 x in the morning with return in the afternoon and 1x in the evening with return 3 hrs later for those who want to dine outside of the resort... limiting movement a lot

HI POEHERE, Thank you for the advice.. I am aware that hiking in remote locations can be dangerous but i'm an avid hiker/trekker/climber. I used to climb indoor rock climbing courses and have some pretty good outdoor repelling and climbing experience from the Marine Corps. Of course i'd never go out alone as I abide by the "buddy" rule just in case anything were to happen. I am in no way trying to be macho about it but I can't see paying over 300 OSD for a guide on a path trail, in reality what can a guide can do for us if were climbing a trail, basically if you fall you fall and a guide can't stop that.
I am very safety concious in basically everything I do and use Operational Risk Management when making most decisions that involve safety concerns. We are aware the round trip up the trail will be approx 6 hrs travel time, so we will definately be prepared with food and water on the climb. Basially besdies telling me about the history I don;t know what a guide can do since he can;t physically help me climb it.
I will also be letting my resort know when we depart and when to expect us back and IF we do not check back by a certain time then something would obviously be wrong.
If we do approach a climb/crossing that is to dangerous i'd just turn back instead of risking injury to my soon to be wife as i'd never want anything to happen to her or myself.
I will however e-mail the individual and ask what services they provide and if a guide is REALLY needed. I'd actually rather it just be Julie and I, unless we were to find a couple who is strong and willing to climb it with us. The video I saw did not look to intimidatng and I am confident we could out climb those two couples in the video pretty easily and they made it with no problems.
I am also highly qualified in survival techniques and i've done a lot of research on FP so far, I.E water can be found in vines etc type stuff.
All this bend said, do you still think I need an actual guide to do this hike? Is it that intense because the video did not look very bad at all?
Again not trying to sound macho or pompus, just telling me experience level and what I think?
I actually think the climb is Mt. Phea and it looks at Mt. otemanu but I could be wrong. Thank you for the advice so far!

After doing a little more research, it is a climb up Mt. Pahia. It looks toward Mt. otemanu once your at the top. From what i've read I hear people love this hike but it is for the physically fit as it is an advanced climb.

As I find out more info from researching i'll post it on here. Here is a guys website that shows two couples making the climb and they are older induvuduals (no I didn;t say they were old just older than us, 28yrs old) and they did not have a guide either. Some good pics and the climb looks like a LOT of FUN!
