An announcement was made by the management of Air Tahiti that they will increase flights between Papeete and Moorea and vv to compensate for the closure of Air Moorea and that the minimum fare for a one way will be 3500 cfp.

YAY to the increase in flights! Any hope of night flights connecting with the ATN 1 arrival?

There's also talk / rumours about a new company with 2 Cessna's that wants to take over the PPT - MOZ line... as long as they won't employ 70 or so people to run 2 small planes they may even make it IMHO

Well, it's now official.
October 26 2010 at 10:03am | source: Tahitipresse |
One of Tahiti's two domestic airlines, Air Moorea, will no longer have any Twin Otter flying from Tahiti to Moorea by the end of October. This decision has been taken a few weeks ago in a very difficult economic situation. The hourly Tahiti to Moorea and back flights on Twin Otter from 6 am to 6 pm will be replaced by much less frequent flights on Air Tahiti's ATR. Air Moorea, a subsidiary of Air Tahiti, has faced financial woes over the last months. It all started with the August 9, 2007 Twin Otter crash off Moorea that killed all 20 persons aboard. Since then, the number of Tahitian residents using fast-ferries instead of Air Moorea has increased. Furthermore, the drop in the number of visitors coming to Tahiti and Her Islands has also affected Air Moorea's activity. Air Moorea's staff will reportedly go from 74 to 32, according to media reports. Some Air Moorea employees have already gone to retirement and some others will be hired by Air Tahiti.

Very sad; I will miss Air Moorea...
Poehere, do you know if Air Tahiti is going to run the Moorea flights out of the Air Moorea terminal, or out of the domestic terminal in the main building, as before?

I don't quite get how they had 74 employees??? It was a pretty small operation. Yes, you need some pilots, some baggage handlers, some counter/check-in people (on both islands), accounting and office staff. Even figuring on 2 shifts daily and 7 days coverage, and vacation/holiday coverage....how can that add up to more than about 50 people max???

Barbi they'll service from the AT terminal... should have done that even with Air Moorea still being alive iso hiring 74 employees and having seperate structures thus huge overhead for such a small company and going broke.
That is the main problem Patti but in any case it is a subsidiary of Air Tahiti that has big financial probs too so they had to close up shop so to speak. FYI AT has around 1000 employees for 9 planes...
ATN has 4 planes running (1 on the ground for occasional charters) and they have 800 staff...
BTW Barbi they published that MINIMUM fare would be 3500 cfp/OW

And I'm assuming that minimum fare is the local/resident fare, the one that used to be about 2000 cfp OW? That's a hefty increase!
I just did a fare search on www.airtahiti.com for random dates in November, and it showed this:
Outbound journey VT266 Economy Tahiti Moorea Tue, 02 Nov 09:05 09:20 Inbound journey VT215 Economy Moorea Tahiti Fri, 05 Nov 17:35 17:50 Air fare cost Type Travellers Net Tax Total Adult: 1 XPF 7,100 XPF 7,100 each Total: XPF 7,100 Actually, that is not as costly as SOME flights I've booked online in the past with Air Moorea... I was amazed at how few flight were available though; they've made deep cuts to the Air Moorea schedule.
