Hi all,
We're planning our next trip!!!!! We have room on our itinerary for an island with a resort (OWBs). Huahine and Moorea lovers, please duke it out in this space. Which one should we go to? Why? Give us the good, the bad, and the ugly.

NB: We love the real Tahiti, polynesian culture, nature, and snorkeling. Before Bora Bora became infested with more OWBs than you can shake a stick at, our favorite luxury resort in Tahiti was the Sofitel Motu, because it is small, feels natural/peaceful, has lovely views, good snorkeling, is close to a little market, and has easy access to restaurants without being in the midst of civilization. It catered to the luxury market while still feeling Tahitian. We'd be hoping for similar on Moorea/Huahine.

Why not do both? And... is an OWB an absolute requirement?

there is a new hotel opening on Huahine in April. No over waters. But close to town and on a fabulous beach.

Otherwise, the Te Tiare if you are looking for an OWB, but you have to take a boat into town.

All I can say, tough decision.

I loved Moorea. I was there in November 2006 and the Sheraton, now Hilton, was not fully booked. Snorkeling was fabulous directly from the OTWs or a short swim out from the beach. I think because of the time of the year, it wasn't as crowded as other times of the year. None of activities we booked were completely full. Weirdly enough, I had a better experience in Bora Bora meeting local people and and even less croweded experience than Moorea. I also got to stay at the now closed Hotel Bora Bora - which was a dream. I still love Moorea and would go back again.

After reading Sabine's recent report on Huahine and Te Tiare, it is definitely on my list. What I love most about anywhere I travel is authenticity and meeting the local people.

Hi Patti,
An OWB is not an absolute requirement for Huahine, but we would like to stay in one on this trip, and we're already planning to go to two other islands where we'll stay in pensions or small family hotels. I don't know if we can fit in 4 islands into our itinerary or not, so I was thinking we'd do an OWB in the Societies.

Thanks for the snorkeling feedback, spotbeagle, and thanks to holte for the rec on the new Huahine hotel. It's nice to know there are more options popping up on Huahine.

Smiles,
Your yosemite girl

Taking a boat to town from Te Tiare really isn't a problem, believe me. Actually, Te Tiare's beach bungalows are great...especially #8. You can't go wrong with any of the OWBs.

BTW YosemiteGirl2: MAURUURU ROA for all your help planning our Rurutu experience. We were prepared for the rustic setting and the menu limitations after receiving your info....always good to be prepared rather than disappointed.
WOW! We felt like we were at the edge of the world. We loved the beach in front of Rurutu Lodge and count ourselves very lucky indeed to have made the trip. Glad to learn that you are well and planning your next FP trip. CHEERS and many thanks!

Hey Vaitape!!

I'm so glad I could be of some help on your last trip. We're going back, but bringing my mom and dad (my mom is in love with whales). They know what the conditions will be like and are ready. :o)

My dad is leaning more towards Moorea for a variety of reasons, but I really think they'd enjoy Huahine more, both for the laid-back feeling, and, from what I hear, the snorkeling. It's good that we've got plenty of time to figure it all out.
Cheers to you! When is your next trip? It's been years for us and we're about to collapse from PF flu.
