Just heard on Radio Polynesie this morning. Pension Chez Nono on Matira beach burned down. Some tourists have lost everything.

Oh, no, what a shame (for the owners of Chez Nono as well as their guests)!

All they say for now on the radio is that the bungalows burned all night...Must have been quite the sight.

There's an article on La Dépêche de Tahiti. It`s in French though. It says that the fire started because of a short circuit.

The Intercontinental Moana took most of the tourists(nice).

Wow, what a fast fire and they're lucky everyone got out. But I feel so bad for the tourists who are left without their passports, credit cards or flight tickets (though they'll be registered with the airlines and shouldn't have trouble getting home once they get emergency passports). It's good to see the Moana and its staff helped in so many ways.

What a shame! Chez Nono was a nice budget place on a beautiful beach close to everything...

This makes me SO sad. I have been terribly remiss about not writing or posting a trip report from our May 2010 (with my elderly mother, that many of you were so helpful about). One of the hurdles for the trip report was figuring out how to make the pictures available to you. I'm sorry I have not done it yet. But anyway, we did stay 3 nights at Chez Nono, in the round bungalows (I can't tell from the article whether they burned, too?), and loved the location so much.

Here is a link to the Chez Nono photos from our trip.

Such sad news to hear it's gone.
