What's up with the Dengue Fever warnings for the area? Are there Drs. at the resorts that can take care of this if we come down with this?I'll be there next week and just seen these warning!
Thanks

They Always have the Dengue Fever warning during the rainy season. Its is caused by a bite of an infected mosquito. They usually pick it up from still rain water in urban areas. There are three types of Dengue Fever that the mosquitos can carry. One is very mild flu symptoms and the worst is a very severe flu plus extreme muscle and bone pain. The worst version is not fatal only to small children. Its very rare that you will get any of the Dengue Fevers. DO NOT WORRY ABOUT IT. If you spray your exposed areas with bug spray you will be fine. Remember most bites occur in the early morning, sunset and at night. Check the CDC website for info. Last year they had a big problem with it and is spread all the way to Hawaii. Tahiti does have an aggresive program for spraying to prevent the spread of it. I am not doctor but a sunburn should be more of a concern than this.

They do spray but sometimes it comes in from other countries such as the Cooks or Fiji. I would not worry about it unless you are taking small children and even then.

.. the difference is that west nile virus may kill you, while dengue fever will make you sick (weeks/months later).
This is a non-issue for tourists. You have 10 times more chances of a car accident on the way to the airport than getting dengue fever in FP.

If you come down with the Dengue, please remember to take doliprane and NOT I REPEAT NOT asprin tablets... Asprin aggrivates it and can cause hemmoraging. I am not a medic, or a Doctor, but having had Dengue 3 times I do know the results of the fever and what medicines to take.. There is no vaccine or real cure it is very similar to the flu and its common name is break bone fever because it feels like every bone in your body is broken... You may have had aches, but it ain't nuthin like the Dengue... Remember Doliprane it is an over the counter medicine at the Pharmacies in the islands... You cannot get any types of meds from any stores you must go to a Pharmacy for even asprin.... I live on Raiatea and do know of what I speak....

Thank you all for your replies. I do have one more question,
will I have to exchange all my US dollars or do some shops
take US money?

We found that everywhere we went they took US money, and would give you change in Tahitian. We found that most will take MC/Visa as long as the purchase was over $20.00 (US).

I would not recommend using US dollars. They will take them but usually at a very bad rate maybe 1 to 1 or even less now that the dollar is so low. Its still best to get at least a few hundred exchanged at the airport when you arrive.

As PA suggested cash in a few hundred at the airport when you arrive at Papeete, not at US airports.

I found you will get the best exchange rate using your credit card, but it's always nice to have some local cash for those smaller purchases.
