Im in my early forties and will be traveling alone to both Tahiti and Bora Bora. I had read awhile ago that it is relativly safe there but I just read Hidden Tahiti and Moon's Tahiti and both of them had warnings for women traveling alone. I want to do alot of the activities there and need to know how safe it will be. I dont flirt but I am friendly and half the fun is getting to know the people and learning their culture from them but now from what ive read it seems like being friendly could be seen as flirting. I need some input on what to expect so my actions dont cause problems.

Here is what I have seen and have observed in Tahiti. The men are very respectful of women. When travelling with a man you will never have any problems. When a women travels alone or with other women the Tahitian men believe that they are single and looking. Remember all Tahitian men do flirt. You need to establish from the begining that you are not interested and just hanging out. I have also read the warning in the two guide books and its not as it was years back. The worry about men coming into your room does not really exist anymore. In the old days Tahitian men would crawl into women's beds (Tahitian women) as a way to show they have become a man. It was common and accepted in Tahitian culture. They still have a little of the idea in their blood. Just be careful and when the drinking gets heavy leave quietly. If you are staying in larger resort type of hotels you will not have anything to worry about. The smaller pensions where you are direcly involved with the locals is where you need to be careful.
Last time I was in Tahiti I met a girl who was from Italy traveling alone. She said she did not have any problems and she did everything on the cheap. Traveled on the ferry from Huahine to Bora, stayed at small pensions and hung out with the locals. The only time she did have a problem was when a misunderstanding between her and a man. The man was drunk and thought she was coming on to him. The next day when he sobered up he apolgized and stopped drinking. She was fine.

I would also purchase Jan Prince's Guide book, its much more up to date and she has a little blurb about traveling alone. Just keep your eyes open and if the surroundings feel wrong go with your instinct.

A single woman traveling alone to Tahiti will get some additional attention mostly because it's less frequent. Having made several solo trips myself, I've never felt fearful. Either way, it's always a good idea to use good judgement, similarly to traveling alone else where in the world. In regard to PA's comments, I wouldn't necessarily say that the Tahitian men flirt more than anyone else but some may be a bit more obvious about it and want to be friendly. Also, it gives them an opportunity to practice their english. In any case, watch the alcohol consumption to avoid misunderstandings.

The flirting thing is just an observation on my part. Since GT is a women she would know much better than I would, but I would not let it interfere with enjoying the islands and the people.

In no way should it interfere with having a great time. There's Frommer's and Hidden Tahiti, but in agreement with PA, Jan Prince's book has the most updated and useful info. I'm heading back in a few weeks and am looking forward to it.

PA - you sure the men were not just flirting with you?? You know how things are over there :-) (Just kidding).

I once got a free upgraded to Business Class on ATN when I checked in without my wife. Although he was a little upset when I requested a second seat for my wife.
