It was a holiday, so if you choose to stay in many of the resorts they have an expensive dinner for either Christmas or New Years or both.
Its all part of the experience.

OK,about the food, my husband says it was great and so do the kids. So yes, it's only me that's picky. Must say they bent over backwards to cater to hubby's diet as he is a vegan, though he did eat the fish while we were there - can't pass that up!
Prior to the dinner we had griped about the price, but after the evening was over and we saw all the joy and celebration shared between staff, guests, and families alike we understood the price. It's funny - the party went on until about 5 a.m. The next day we left for PPT, and I commented to someone about the duration of the party. She said, "that's nothing, when I was little on the atoll my parents would have a party for 5 days straight, and before them my grandparents would go for 2 weeks". Boy do I like the island lifestyle!

Nice report. Thank you for posting. I wish I could find the same beauty here on O'ahu.

My wife calls this video a cruel and usual punishment! We had arrived in Manihi on New Years Eve 2006. And aside from moving the boarding area (see old picture here, http://wikitravel.org/en/Manihi). We are glad to see not much has changed. It's still the sleepy resort/village at the edge of the world.
Yeah you pay alot for mediocre food. But it's one of the few places in the world that my wife and I allow the scenery to compensate for the poor flavoring.
Can wait to go back ...

ryo-oh-ki, the boarding area is still there and exactly the same. We had a good laugh about the contrast between it and the SEA airport we had just left - so far in one day!
The bikes are still free to borrow, as are the kayaks and outriggers.

I haven't been on the forum forever and this was one of the first things I looked at. Sigh! The video was great. We stayed at the Manihi Pearl in 2004 - that seems like a lifetime ago. Your video brought it all back so vividly. We love the "being on the edge of the world" feeling. It really makes you reflect on life and makes you slow waaaaaayyyy down.
