Ia Orana everyone!
I plan on bringing back a nice hand carved Tiki statue and a ukulele. I don't want to get caught with something "made in China or Indonesia", want to buy from local artists.

Would you have suggestions/contacts? Any island will do, but would prefer Moorea or Tahiti so I don't have to haul these all over the place!

Thanks!

There's a guy on Moorea who makes really nice ukulele's. He was in the little craft shops across from Club Bali Hai. With the downturn in tourism...not sure if he's still there. But I will check when I'm there in a few weeks.

The best hand carved stuff actually comes from the Marquesas.

That's great Patti, thanks. As long as it comes from FP, I don't care which island it comes from. I just don't want imported stuff.

How about the market in PPT? Do they have local artists? It's been a while - I can't remember.

Andie, there is a shop upstairs in Le Marche in PPT that sells authentic stuff from the Marquesas.....just along from the tattoo shop...which is close to the pearl shop I just mentioned to YosomiteGirl2 on another thread. Anyway, the people who run the shop are from the Marquesas and are related to our friend....not sure of the prices but the stuff is authentic.

Now regarding the ukulele...... There is a wonderful music shop run by a fabulous guy named Heimoana...he is the nephew of some of the Teava Piti guys. Anyway, his shop is close to Le Marche too but the name of the shop escapes me now. He makes fabulous uke's though they are expensive. I'll do some research and get you the name of his shop..maybe Island Boy at Heart will sign in soon..he knows who I mean.

Andie, as vaitape mentioned the ukes are expensive. How much are you thinking about paying for one? The handmade ones we saw across from CBH were around $200 for a basic one and over $400 for the ones with the hand carved designs.

Thanks for the tip Vaitape - I would appreciate the information about the ukes too.

Patti - I'll check out the shop near the CBH. I expected to pay around $300 for a decent one. Hand carved designs would be even better..

The internet is wonderful (most of the time!)

Patti- I found a thread on another tahiti travel forum talking about the shop near the CBH!

Vaitape - Found the name of the Ukulele shop in Papeete from the same thread and the information came from...Islandboy! The name of the shop is Padrone's Music and John Heimoana runs it. It has to be that one!

Yep, that's it! Heimoana is a great guy....he did a song for us when we were in his shop. I'll never forget that....even if I sort of had a brain-drain moment! You would do well to stop in just to say hi if nothing else.
And, the Marquesas shop in Le Marche is worth a look too...
Have Fun...when are you going?
