First time to Tahiti at the end of February. The question i have pertains to carry ons on Air Tahiti. Their website indicates only 3 kilos or 6.6 pounds maximum is allowed. Can any tell me if they are very strict with this?
Thanks for your help.

Yes and no. And I mean that literally. Sometimes they weigh your stuff, many times they do not.
I personally have NEVER had my carry ons weighed. But I know many peole who have. I am always more than 6.6 pounds (probably closer to 10-12 pounds)...as I always have my cameras and electronics in my carryons. I think as long as you don't look like you have a lot, and your carry ons aren't huge, and you don't put it up on the counter right in front of their face, they likely won't ask to weigh it. I usually have mine in a small day pack on my back and have never been asked to see it.

I always use a backpack. Never have had it weighed. Keep it on your back, and not in front of their faces.

A small to medium size backpack is the best idea, with your valuable stuff in it -- cameras, electronics, meds, jewelry, etc. The overhead bins and under-seat space is too small to take anything larger; normal 20" rollerboards would not fit anyway.

On our last visit there in Nov 2010, they asked to see our carry-ons at each island we stopped at. At the commencement of our trip at Air Tahiti in Papeete they gave us one pink luggage tag for each piece of carry on (as they had viewed our backpacks there but didn't weigh them) so we kept these for the rest of the trip.

Could I get away with a very small carry on and a back pack?
I have so much stuff including a small suitcase that is books for my hubby and beans to make chili.
I have a larger suit case (have to go weigh it), very small business suitcase and then a back pack and a purse. My large suitcase has items that I cannot ditch- a tent for over the bed and a tent for outside (screen house). The tent my hubby got for the bed is not working that well.
What do you think?

Holte,
Save the weight of the beans -- I've been able to buy beans readily in grocery stores there -- canned kidney and pinto beans, as we often make chile for our Tahitian friends. Just bring the spices! (They are called "haricots rouges" for red beans and "haricourts blancs" for white beans.)
Remember that your international luggage weight is 50 pounds per bag x 2 bags for check-in, so don't overpack your larger suitcase with books and heavy stuff! Yes, that is heavier than the interisland flight allowance of 44 pounds TOTAL per person, but the excess luggage fee is not that expensive. I think they charged us 70 cpf per KILO (2.2 pounds) for excess weight last time.

Thanks for the info, I wonder why my hubby is purchasing canned chili from China. Bluck.
He is renting a house where there are holes in the construction. I am bringing screen to put over the windows and a staple gun and staples. He wanted Great Stuff that expands to fill in the holes, but since it's flammable, no go on the plane.
I was thinking it's 50 pounds per person international? It's good to know that the overage isn't that expensive on Air Tahiti.
He said his buddies are awaiting the books that I am bringing. I have to try out a Kindle type thing. I just don't think I could stand reading on it, but who knows. I like reading mindless mystery books and it appears people prefer more intellectual stuff. Anyway, that 's what I see in the lending library except for the tons of books we have brought and left.

Barbi-do you put meat in your chili and if so, what?
I am not a heart eater so that isn't going to happen.
