holte,
I bought a Kindle for myself at Christmas and absolutely love it. It took a bit of time to get used to it but wow, it's great. I've accessed free and some cheaper books from Amazon to get accustomed to the different style of "book reading". Will get some best sellers now that I am comfortable.
Wahoo! 20 books worth fitting in such a little space... TRY IT!

Don't fret about bringing food! Maybe bring some sauce packets like Knorr Alfredo or Herb and Garlic sauce or Taco or Spaghetti seasonings to embellish pasta or rice dishes. They don't weigh much or take up much space. You will do just fine in the food department because most is available at Super Fare Nui.

I can see bringing some food stuffs from home if you are budgeting and going for a week or 2. But since you are going for longer, maybe it would be beneficial to focus on bringing stuff like you mentioned...the screen room and bed tent and also things like flash drives, memory sticks, etc that are so expensive over there...THE BIG TICKET ITEMS!

Think about some tools that you use in your kitchen and feel you can't live without and perhaps pack those (a vegetable peeler, a decent knife, those plastic flat cutting surfaces that roll up easily and Ziplock bags come to my mind). SUNSCREEN is so expensive down there so maybe bring heaps of that.
And PLEASE! Bring that camera your husband forgot!!! We're really looking forward to your photos.

We are excited for you. When will you arrive?

Holte,

+1 on the recommendation for the Kindle! I too devour books when we are in FP (love to read books about or set in the South Pacific!), and the Kindle makes it SO much easier to haul everything with little weight. I use the cheaper ($139) model, about the size and weight of a paperback, and I bought the cover that has a built-in book light that charges off the Kindle, so no batteries. The charger is good up to 240v so will work with the outlets in FP, but you might want to bring a plug adaptor.

I agree about the food -- leave the heavy items home unless it's something that you can't buy there. We bring packets of chile mix, red beans & rice mix, and seasonings like red pepper flakes and oregano, any other spices that you regularly use and are not sure are available. Also, two sharp knives, plastic cutting board, veggie peeler and can opener. I make a chocolate fudge there for friends, so bring my own chocolate chips, which I've never seen sold in FP.

"If in doubt, leave it out!"

Isn't it funny for all of the times I have been to FP that I am having a breakdown about this?

It's different being a tourist and going for much longer. Still a tourist , but you know what I mean. So THANK YOU for all of the advice!!

This site is so fabulous with the people on here, isn't it?

I am leaving Feb 15.My specialist doctor told me that I am in good shape for traveling because I am on coumadin, so I am believing him.

I did not know this. There is medical care over in FP, but there is govt care and private doctors. I will go to a private doctor.

A nurse flies in twice a week and takes blood (many diabetics over there). I pay the nurse $2.00 and then the blood is flown with the nurse to Papeete.

I have to talk to my insurance company as they will reimburse the lab. I have to wait until I am done with work so I can be on the phone for however long this will take.

I have an idea that could save the French govt a jillion dollars. I wonder why they don't have people do their own tests like they do over here?

I am going to go up to Barnes and Noble and try out the Kindle and the Nook. It's good to hear this from people who are avid readers as I just couldn't see me reading on them as I hate reading on a computer.

Thanks again!!!!!!!

the Kindle is different than reading on the computer...ya gotta try it!
Be sure to read Sex Lives of Cannibals..hilarious (if you haven't already!)....takes place in Kiribati. Also written by the same author is Getting Stoned with Savages which takes place in Vanautu and Fiji...not as funny IMO but still good. More great reads are the books by Celestine Viate which are specific to life in FP.
Totally off topic.......again! Sorry!

Thanks. I read the getting stoned one. I couldn't remember if I had read the other one and now I see I haven't.

I read the Celestine Viate ones and left them on Huahine.

I measured a carry on bag that I have and it's 2 inches too big now. The airlines have changes the size from when I originally bought that nice piece of luggage.

So, instead of buying another piece of luggage, I am going to pay to check it and hope that I can stick it in one of the other suitcases on the way home as we will not have as much stuff on the way back. For example, all of hubbies books will be left there. And maybe we can store the tent there as well.

We always take backpacks as carry-on bags (no matter where we travel). You can usually move stuff around so it meets the requirements for dimensions. Plus it's super-easy to carry around (and gives you a backpack for hiking or shopping when you get to your destination).

Holte, you are allowed TWO check-in bags on ATN (up to 50 pounds each). Is your too-big carry on bag the third one? I wouldn't check it; too expensive on ATN! Their fee for a third bag is $125!! http://www.airtahitinui-usa.com/traveldesk/baggage.asp#excess

Make sure the nurse in Huahine is also taking blood for a coumadin-level test. That should be checked regularly too.

I only have a coumadin test. No diabetes for me. I hope !

I am going to be changing what I eat, so I am going to get tested once a week to start until I feel that I am OK with what I am eating over there.
