What a strange planet we live on. Freezing in the US, bushfires on the west coast of Oz and floods now cyclone north east and flooding in the south east with a heatwave central east (where we are), volcanoes in Indonesia and now Japan, mudslides in South America, Tsunamis in Samoa and Vanuatu - maybe the movie 2012 might not be far off the mark?

I didn't see the movie, but I understand from some people that 2012 in the Mayan calendar means the end of power as a way of controlling the world and a move to justice instead. Not the end of the world.

I am going with that interpretation.

Due to hit Cairns in about 3 hours. Upgraded to a Category 5 (4 wiped out Darwin in 1974). Not good!

I heard it on our news this morning (actually, it's been all over the news for a couple of days, but this morning they were saying many people were being turned away from shelters because they were full). One poor woman was in tears saying she hoped they'd be able to find somewhere safe to ride it out. Very scary.

Still news coming through, but no deaths have been reported yet. Local news have said that complete homes are completely gone. Main areas hit are Mission Beach, Innisfail and Dunk Island. Storm is moving towards Mt Isa and is now category 3 (5 when it hit the coast). Looks to be on par or worse than Hurricane Katrina. Will keep you posted once communication is up and running again. Doesn't look real good, though. A baby was born in an evacuation centre, though!

Pretty much complete nothing on the news here. Egypt has captured all the hard news coverage today
