Have a great trip. Someday we might actually be there the same time as you! LOL!

Hope the weather is as spectacular for you as it was for us.....but then again...maybe not...because the island is really suffering from the drought....they could RREALLY use some rain. :-(

Bon Voyage Barbi and Randy. Tip a Hinano or 12 for me.

Thanks, all! The packing is finally done, and we are on our way to LAX this afternoon. I'll try to post news from Moorea if I can get decent WiFi access. Manuia!

MID-TRIP REPORT:

Hello from Moorea! We had no trouble with carrying our duty-free liquids on the Air Tahiti flight from Tahiti to Moorea, but all our luggage was weighed AND we were charged an excess luggage weight fee… It’s not an excessive fee, only 70f per kilo (2.2 pounds). One new thing: at the Air Tahiti gate to check-in for the plane to Moorea, they were confiscating all FLOWERS – everyone had to remove their brand-new leis and their tiare flowers from their ears, and leave them at the gate. No Tahiti flowers allowed on Moorea! Bummer…

Exchange rate on arrival at the PPT airport bank was 81.7; since then I’ve heard it’s dropped to about 78. Some stores are still taking dollars at the rate of 80 cpf. The weather so far has been gorgeous – sunny, about 85 degrees, but very dry. Moorea is experiencing a drought and water shortgage, and water pressure is cut back at certain times of the day. We are actually hoping for some rain for the good of the island!

We survived the red alert for the tsunami – there is a good warning system on Moorea to let people know when they need to head for the hills. On this side of the island, most of the resorts and pensions brought their clients up to the Legends resort on the mountain near the IC. (The resort is closed for renovations in March, but they kindly opened their reception area and brought bread and fruit in for us “refugees.”) We were woken and warned at 5 a.m. to be out by 6 a.m., in time for a 7:15 a.m. first wave, so there was time to gather valuables and pack a small backpack with water, food, sunscreen, insect spray. The tsunami was very small here – no noticeable wave unless you were directly on the lagoon shore, and then only about 70 cm. We are very thankful for that! We were back home in our bungalow by around 10 a.m., for an uneventful rest of the day.

I’m having difficulty getting convenient internet access, so will only be checking in on the forum every now and then. Manuia!
