Poehere, where are you? My parents are in Moorea. I am concerned. Would appreciate if you could keep us posted. Take care.

Natalie, Poehere is out on Tikehau. But Jacques and a couple others are on Moorea...and so far all sounds just fine. Last time there was a tsunami warning in FP, it turned out to be much a do about nothing. But it's ALWAYS better to be safe than sorry. It's good to know the islands do have the advanced warning systems in place with sirens and all.

Moorea would be a very safe place to be. It's covered with hills and other high spots. The Tuamotus, on the other hand, are FLAT!

we were woken at 5:30 AM because the sirens went off downtown, but they are not heard out here. The people we are renting from woke us up. We are 1/2 mile inland and it's thought to be OK, but we all had plans of going up the mountain a ways.

So far nothing and it's almost 9 AM. I don't think anything is happening. They can tell the wave patterns, but cannot predict the height of them. They know where they are going to hit. For example, they identified the area in Huahine that would get the most damage, but so far nothing.

A lot of people are in Fare looking for some reason.

The Marquesas are the islands thought to be getting the most damage. I don't think anything is happening in Moorea. And the people can go up the mountain no problem, I feel.

From what I've heard so far, Huahine has already had their first waves come through...only about 1.5 feet..so not too bad at all.

Just got home from work in the UK, heard about the Tsunami and thought of you guys, sincerely hope all is well over there and the alerts/alarms are just a precaution.

Best wishes to all those effected by this terrible disaster.

All is well here... an atoll for sure is not the most ideal place to be during a tsunami warning, but they're pretty well organised. The muto'i (= community police) came by around 1 am LT to ask us to be prepared (take food, water and cloths) for evacuation... but where to go other than the townhall which is lagoon side facing NW!? There really ain't no place to go on an atoll than climbing up a coconut tree. I got our treasures, prepared some stuff and kept watch on the internet with the blind cat at my side. At 4h30 the High Commissionar's office set off the alarm sytems in the whole of FP and I could actually here the siren go off here, pretty good as last year while in Tahiti we heard nothing.
We got our stuff, the cat knew instinctly something was up, animals have to sense. We discussed what to do and decided to ask permission to stay at home, it being on stilts with a very high roof and facing the ocean but Southwards. In FP during such events, there is one radio station that broadcasts news, info, instructions but also passes messages on from people trying to reach family on other islands. So we listened to the radio and checked the internet. The red alert means no traffic, no planes, no boats until further notice. All of a sudden we see a couple of tourists biking around! Wow that was a surprise so we called out to them, explained what was going on and that they should go back to their pension. They were very surprised and not aware about the official warning... hmmm that's not good!

Meanwhile the red alert has been lifted, they kept the east coast of Tahiti and Marquesas on a longer watch. Apparantly nothing major happened except for 3 houses being damaged by floods in the Taipivai valley (Nuku Hiva).

Don't know how long it will be for air traffic to get back to normal as in those cases Air Tahiti usually sends its planes to the Marquesas as Hiva Oa and Nuku Hiva are the only 2 islands with airports high up. I believe ATN has cancelled one flight out of PPT and Air France took off for Lax just a while ago. Ferry wise, things should return to normal too, all boats go out to sea where they're safer than in the Papeete harbour.

I have just seen some news on Japan (can't watch video on internet) and it is absolutely horrific. We have been (once again) quite lucky in FP and other South Pacific islands. It makes you realise how vunerable we are and nothing and no one can beat nature.
