Because the Papeete airport currency exchange counter at Banque de Polynesie is no longer open for incoming international flights, and because waiting to exchange at a bank during business hours in FP may be inconvenient (or impossible for some itineraries) many of us are considering purchasing Tahitian francs (XPF or CPF) before leaving the USA.
Please post here any currency exchange rates or quotes you receive from a source within the USA, to help us all find the best rates and locations... thanks!
It would also be helpful if returning travelers post what currency rate (and fees) they experienced in FP, and where they exchanged funds.

American Express Travel Offices in specific cities offer currency exchange and it's possible to purchase CPF from them before leaving for FP. The rates and fees vary by local office, are not usually available online, and change from day to day, so do a search for your closest office and then phone them to inquire. http://www.amextravelresources.com/ ................... From the Phoenix AmExTS office, I received this information today:
"Thank you for your inquiry into the purchase of Polynesian Francs. We certainly can order the currency for you, but we do not keep that currency on hand. If you can provide us at least a week to get it for you there would be no additional charges, just the standard transaction fee of $5.00. If you need it sooner than that we can receive within 2 business days, but if we have less than a week there is an $20.00 expedited service fee, in addition to the standard $5.00 fee. The exchange rate will be whatever the rate is on the day you are paying for the currency.
Today's rate is : 0.013521449 which means you are getting 73.96 XPF for 1 US Dollar. " ................. (NOTE: The xe.com rate for CPF today is 83.4) (NOTE: When I left Tahiti last Saturday night, the exchange rate at the Intercontinental front desk was 75, down from 76 the day before, no fee, and a $250 maximum.)

I doubt that the Banque that was open after every international flight arrival in the airport at Faaa ever made a profit. The only income was from fees on exchange so it was closed.

And it had the cheapest flat-rate fee in town -- only 470f, while most of the normal banks charge 1000f+ per exchange.

Thanks to a poster on Trip Advisor, today I discovered that Wells Fargo Bank will do currency exchange either online, by phone, or in person at their local international teller sites. You do NOT need to be a Wells Fargo customer, and can pay instead by Visa or Mastercard. Currency will be delivered to your home by Fed Ex, and you must be present to sign for delivery. https://www.wellsfargo.com/foreignexchange/products
Today the exchange rate was 78.9, which the best I've seen in the USA, and probably as good as you would get at a bank in FP today. (xe.com is 83.5) Flat fee transaction fee for exchanges under $1,000 is $12, FREE on orders for more than $1,000, up to a max of $3,000.
I placed an order today!

I saw that too Barbara. And I am a Wells Fargo customer.....so I think this is the way I will go in the future. I'll just have to find out which office here in Vegas is an international one. So far, out of all the different options mentioned, that one easily seems like the best option.
