I have just returned from my trip to Huahine that was for 2 1/2 months. My husband was there for almost 6 months.
I love Huahine even more than before. It is so beautiful and we have met so many fun and interesting and nice people.
One of the new people we met is Amo or Jean Pierre who does Poetania cruises. He speaks English and he has such a great sense of humor. He also runs the bed and breakfast called Poetania after his 2 daughters, Poe and Tania.
One of our friends gave us a woven hat. I had carried it as I didn't want it to squash in my luggage. When we got to customs in LA, I was selected by the drug sniffing dog. That is such a nice thing to happen in front of everyone.
These hats may carry the red mite. I tried to abandon it at that point, but no can do. I had to go to the agriculture area . The most unusual thing is that they did not have the hat go through the machine. rather, all of my luggage went through the machine.
If you do not want the honor of being selected by the drug sniffing dog and if you do not have the time to go through the extra check, I suggest not taking anything like that from the islands.
When my hubby and I were sitting outside of the Tom Bradley terminal, he noticed that there were a hundred million bees swarming on the concrete wall right by the sidewalk. It was interesting watching the people freak out when they accidentally walked into the swarm. People were taking movies of the swarm.
I went and informed an official person who directed me to the information desk. The girl asked me if I was afraid. I told her that it could be dangerous for someone who had allergies. I am sure that she thought I was just another nut in the day.
Eventually, a whole swarm of official came out and roped the area off. They also called bee patrol who came in a truck. We saw that the truck said BEE PATROL. That is how we knew who they were.
They all stood around and took pictures of this crazy swarm that was attached to the concrete wall. We never did find out what happened to the bees as we had to catch our flight.
We hope to go back in November for 6 months.
A car is necessary, we feel. We would be able to do far more things with a car and have more of a social life. Riding a bicycle is limiting, I am sad to say.

Holte, welcome back...or should I say "so sorry"?! Glad to hear you had a good time and that you're planning the next stay already!

Welcome back to the States. Sounds wonderful to spend so much time in true paradise. Now I'm going to youtube to see if I can see that swarm of bees in action!

My hubby has been taking a medication for 40 some years.
Due to a mix up , supposedly he had the wrong prescription given to him in November when he left the US. It turned out he didn't, but that's neither here nor there in this story.
My Daughter -in-law sent the "correct" one to him sometime in February. Around April 23, hubby was informed that he could not have his meds as they were not allowed into France. They said that they would mail them back.
The box came in the mail yesterday. It was empty. No meds. Just an empty box. These are not meds that anyone would get any joy from at all, so I doubt if they were stolen. But maybe.
Crazy. So make sure that you have plenty of med supply when you go because you may not be able to get your meds there.

Wow, that's awful. Were they insured at all (I'd like to see you get your money back for them, at least)!
When I fell in Bora Bora and had to take antibiotics, I brought them with me when I visited my own doctor at home (she had to take out the stitches). She had to look up the name in her drug guide to see what I was taking (they were from France and had a different name than we call them). It turns out I was on a double-dose of them (not unusual, I guess, if you cut yourself in the tropics).
Edited to add that it's pretty typical that you can't mail prescription drugs over any borders. It might be different if the pharmacy itself does the mailing, but private individuals can't do it.

It was not expensive for the drugs because at the time, hubby and I both had insurance, so both work together to pay (so to speak as we still paid even with 2 insurances)
How much did your anti biotics cost over there? Was the doctor visit expensive?
I did not realize that you can't mail drugs. That's good info to know.
So far, knock on wood, Melaleuca oil seems to work for us. I also bring Neosporin.

I don't know how much the doctor's visit or the prescriptions were (or the taxi or the person having to goback later to pick up the prescription because the pharmacy was closed from noon to 2 p.m.) because the Sofitel Motu paid for everything! I told them I had insurance, but they insisted on covering all of my costs. I thought that was incredibly kind (and smart business) since, although I fell on their property, I wasn't walking on a marked path. We'd walked around the north end of the island to Point Noir and we were walking on the lava rock there when I fell (actually, we were on the way back to the resort).
