Hey guys,
I am planning on getting from NZ to South America next year in January after spending some time in Asia. My plan is getting from Auckland to LA with Air Tahiti Nui, with a stopover in Tahiti to visit the islands for about a week. What are the conditions of the stopover? Is there a time limit in days (I heard 4days which would limit me to two islands)? I will be on a budget so not really interested in combined offers with hotels/resorts.
Your help would be much appreciated !
Regards Tom

What airline are you planning on taking? I believe you can get from AUK to LAX via PPT on Air Tahiti Nui -- there may be other options as well. Start by checking the ATN webpages for fares/schedules.
Here's a link on the ATN Auckland webpage that may take you to more info: http://www.airtahitinui.co.nz/atnspecial/atnspecial.asp?id=1697&special_type=3
Here's a page specifically with the Tahiti stopover options: http://www.airtahitinui.co.nz/hotelbooking/us2011/default.asp
Although you might not be interested in a package, those hotel prices look pretty amazing! Under the "terms & conditions" on the packages page, it states: "The packages are available for a maximum of 4 consectutive nights in total. Only one stopover can be purchased per journey."
It's not clear if that time limit applies to simple ticketing for the flight as well.

thanks for the prompt answer !
I've checked the page indeed, and while it says 'enjoy a stopover in beautiful Tahiti', it only relates to the Tiare Tahiti Stopovers which consist in booking up to 4 nights through a resort at a better rate.
My question is only about the individual stay itself. Are the stays limited to 4 days, no matter if you're staying with a resort or in a pension?
Thank you :)
edit: thanks I hadnt read the second half of your message, after you edited it :) ok well maybe someone will have more info about it..
Otherwise is there any other way of getting from anywhere in Asia/OZ/NZ to the US, with a stopover in Tahiti?

You might try pricing it as a multi-destination trip, with a combination of airlines, to give yourself a longer stay in Tahiti. For example, you could take Qantas or Air New Zealand or Emirates from AKL to PPT, and then Air Tahiti Nui or Air France from PPT-LAX. If you can find code shares (for example,. Qantas codeshares with ATN) on one itinerary, it may be cheaper.
Use a flight search engine that gives you all the airline options.
Also, there is a really knowledgeable group of folks on the forums on Flyertalk that might be able to help you; they are absolutely experts on anything complicated about airlines! Try posting your question on this page: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/australia-new-zealand-south-pacific-461/

You're welcome, Pep! Perhaps Gary&Cath will provide more info shortly -- they are our Aussie experts. Not too many of us have done the stopover, so it will be very interesting to hear what you decide to do.
Edited to add: You might want to check the options on Air New Zealand at this link: http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/tasman-pacific-fares
Also, I've seen postings on Flyertalk awhile back where people booked a trip from Auckland to LAX with a longish stopover in the Cook Islands (Rarotonga = RAR). From RAR, you can get a flight to PPT and back on Air Tahiti (not Air Tahiti Nui) twice a week. This might be a good option too, though more flying time.

When I try to book a flight in June of this year for instance, from AKL to LAX with stopover in PPT, the full price of a one-way ticket is 1177 NZD which is about 700 Euros.
Now if I try booking a flight from PPT to LAX, the price is 146.000 XPF which is about 1200 Euros.
So its about twice the price for half the distance? Doesn't make much sense to me, does it?
I tried again with different dates.. unsuccessfully

yes, it makes sense. If you only go to Tahiti, the trip seems to cost a fortune. Why? None of us can figure it out.

It makes complete sense to Air Tahiti Nui....although it makes no sense to the rest of us. It is called highway robbery!

I've flowen on 6-8 different airlines to Tahiti but never on ATN Thank God for Hawaiian Air. The FP government sold their hotel in New Zealand and their private aircraft for government. If ATN keeps on operating in the Red it to will be sold if there is anything left to sell. Corsair please start again flying to French Polynesia
