If your bag is gate-checked, it will fly on to the ticketed destination—which would be a problem.
I suppose it's not if you're on a x-days stopover?

Holte's article nicely explains hidden city ticketing. If you are on a planned and paid stopover (like the 4 day Tahiti stopover that ATN allows), you should be able to retrieve even checkedluggage in PPT. Just make sure when you check in that your bag is tagged "PPT" and not "LAX"! I agree that you should not use your frequent flier number on a reservation that you plan to use to get to the "hidden City," i.e., Papeete. (It's a shame to lose the miles, but they most likely wouldn't post anyway if you don't complete the itinerary all the way to LAX.)
As far as immigration is concerned, if you are on a ticketed layover, it won't be a problem. If they ask for your return ticket, you actually would have two: the 4-day later ticket to LAX as well as your actual ongoing ticket you will be using. I'd show the LAX ticket to avoid any confusion.
Airlines don't aggressively pursue people who do this. If you are not a frequent flier, they are even less likely to come after you afterwards with any additional charges. Things happen: people get sick on vacation, plans change, etc. It's not a good idea to do it more than once though!

Pep,
I've looked a little closer at the actual fare rules on the ATN ticketing between AKL and PPT with a layover in PPT, and they don't seem to impose the 4-day stay limit like the packages do. For example, pricing a 12-day stay next March 2012 (the furthest out the calendar will allow), these fare rules show up:
03.SEASONALITY NO SEASONAL TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS APPLY.06.MINIMUM STAY TRAVEL FROM LAST STOPOVER MUST COMMENCE NO EARLIER THAN 2 DAYS AFTER DEPARTURE FROM FARE ORIGIN.07.MAXIMUM STAY NO MAXIMUM STAY REQUIREMENTS APPLY.08.STOPOVERS UNLIMITED FREE STOPOVERS PERMITTED ON THE PRICING UNIT UNLIMITED IN PPT/LAX UNLIMITED IN AKL.11.BLACKOUT DATES NO BLACKOUT DATES APPLY.14.TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS NO TRAVEL DATE RESTRICTIONS APPLY.
Here's the link: https://secure.airtahitinui.com/AirTahitiNuiFareRules/FareRules.aspx?multi=1&faretype1=QEENZ&origin1=AKL&dest1=LAX&date1=18Mar&rtg1=PA01&owrt1=R&pos1=TPV&faretype2=QEENZ&origin2=AKL&dest2=LAX&date2=18Mar&rtg2=PA01&owrt2=R&pos2=TPV
You might try calling an Air Tahiti Nui office and inquiring about any limit on the time you could stay in PPT while traveling between AUK and LAX!

Hi Barbi,
well that's exactly what I did yesterday (before I even read your post)
so I called the French Office of ATN in Paris and even though she told me they were totally different than ATN in NZ in terms of conditions and promotions, she was able to get me a quote for a one way flight in August from AKL to LAX (since it will be approximately the same period next year) with a 10 days stopover in Tahiti. Also she added that there was no restriction of time for it, which confirms what you mentioned above. Total price is about 800€ which would be absolutely perfect for me (she even sounded surprised on the phone so hopefully it wont be too much out next year :)
So thanks again all on the forum, and hats off to you Barbi for your help and your time! Much much appreciated !
