This has been talked about in another thread, but probably deserves its own topic so people can see the new info. Here is the news report translated from French: http://www.tahiti-infos.com/Diminution-de-la-franchise-bagage-ATN-s-explique_a24745.html ......... Decrease in baggage: ATN explained
Two days after announcing its shrinking baggage allowance in economy class, the management of Air Tahiti, which has not accepted our interview request, however, sent a statement to the media to provide some additional explanations on this measure which has caused much ink, especially in the pages 'comments' info from Tahiti. (see article)
"Many international companies have already reduced their baggage allowances respectively" , says the company management in tiara, which she says is only getting "closer to international standards for transportation of baggage , in a context of strong rising cost of fuel.
The price of excess baggage not set. This measure will come into force on 1 July 2011. The baggage allowance in economy class will then go from February to January luggage per passenger tickets issued from July 2011. In addition to the free baggage of 23 kg provided in the franchise, passengers will have the opportunity to travel with additional baggage by paying an excess baggage, says the company, which states that the price of these surpluses will be defined and communicated shortly.
Customers will be able to purchase advance their surplus at a discount, however, can assert ATN today.
The new baggage will apply for tickets issued on or after 1 July 2011. Passengers traveling after 1 July 2011 with a ticket purchased before 1 July 2011 duty-free today. ................

I hope that this measure keeps the price of the ticket down. If people want excess baggage and are paying for it, then that would be a fair way to keep the price of the tickets down,, if in fact that is what they do

ATN's Facebook comment on decrease in luggage allowance:
Air Tahiti Nui USA wrote: "As you may be aware, many if not most airlines today have changed their luggage policy and adopted a policy where check-in luggage is at a surcharge. We have received from our head office a new policy as well on the luggage allowance as you have seen from the press release done in Tahiti and posted above by some of our fans, that due to raising fuel costs, Air Tahiti Nui will be changing the two piece allowance to one piece allowance whereas additional bags will be at a charge which has not yet been determined. Although we don't have all the info yet, we would like to clarify that this will be effective for all tickets PURCHASED FROM JULY 1ST onward. If you are already holding a ticket for future travel, you will still benefit from the two-piece allowance. We will post more info once the policy is completed. Thank you."

I don't study the policies of too many international airlines...so the question is.....are many international airlines changing their luggage policies? I know most domestic airlines have....but what about the international ones?

I don`t fly internationally all that often, but last year when we flew to France, we were allowed 1 checked bag (we had the cheapest level of seats).

The domestic airlines that also fly internationally have changed reduced their allowed checked baggage. I flew to Ireland (work trip) in January with one of our domestic airlines that flies all over the world. I don't have the miles, but because of company contract with the airline I'm at the lowest level "premier" status. One of the perks of the "premier" is an additional piece of checked baggage is free (I only checked one so it didn't really matter to me) and extra carry on with no charge (I think it's an extra beyond the normal one + personal item - this didn't matter to me either).

Air France still allows two free checked bags; so does Hawaiian Airlines on flights to PPT.

A lot of major airlines have max baggage allowance of 23 kg and ability to purchase extra... the major prob with ATN is them issuing tickets to crew, their family members etc nearly for free and not only to the ATN family (800 + people x # of family x # tickets per year) but to those of Air Tahiti as well (1000 + people x # of family x # tickets per year) One of the major audits done at the company even mentioned at some stage more than 20.000 issued tickets never having been paid... So the big question could be: where to start to economise.
The new rule has made a LOT of noise locally, you bet it being extremely unpopular with people being used to taking back huge number of KG's without paying overweight, upgrades without paying extra etc.... Apparently the local government at one stage (when they were still flying to JFK) paid in excess of 3 mio us$ to unblock a plane due to some misbehaviour in New York... Now that the new Prez has asked the locals to pitch in in order to fill up ATN's empty treasure chest, people are sort of disgusted
Hard to discipline a child at 15 years of age, one has to start when they're still in their nappies so to speak LOL
