Another way to write the pronunciation would be maw-taw-ee-vaw

Let me try to pronounce it:
Maa (like in Ma and Pa) - taa (rhymes with ma) - ee (like in we) - vaa (rhymes with ma)
How's that?

Yes, like that! I was going to say like Ma and Pa, but some people say them more like Mah (like yah) instead of Maw, like law.

Often, the "ai" combo is pronounced like the letter "I" in English (for example, the Tahitian word "pai" is often pronounced like the English word "pie"), even though Tahitian vowels normally should each be pronounced separately, in this case, as "ah" and "ee" -- So when said quickly, "ah-ee" becomes "I" -- hope that makes sense. Listen carefully when you arrive, and you might hear it both ways...
Anyone else notice that lately the French "oui" is pronounced both as "We" and "Way"? Although we've been going to FP for 17 years, this is something we really only noticed in the past 2-3 years, and it may be because we've been exposed to more French natives lately... but then I heard some Tahitian friends saying "way" as well, which they never did before! (Any thoughts, Poehere? -- I'm counting on you as the language guru!)

I went to Teahupo'o this year and learned that it is pronounced Cho - po.
Just like in the US. You think something is one way and then it's not!

Barbi, that's true about ah-ee and "i"---if you say ah-ee fast, it really is "i"!
We hear "way" (for oui) here a lot in parts of Quebec. I didn't notice it in FP. The Yarn Harlot (a Canadian knitter/writer) was in England when she was approached by some women from France. They asked her (in French) if she spoke French and she replied, "Oui." They said, "Oh, you're from Canada!" I assume she said it a bit like "way".
When my son was in French Immersion in Grade 1, he came home and told me he could count to five. "Ur, dur, twah, cat, sank". And then talked about "durz erf" (two eggs). I was shocked at his pronunciation (it sure wasn't the Parisian French I was taught in school). Then I found out his teacher was from the Gaspé peninsula (in Quebec) and that was a regional dialect. The school he went to had teacher from Belgium, France, Switzerland, and various parts of Quebec so the kids got used to a variety of accents. I thought that was really cool.

@ Barbi... the "oui" as "way" is in fact "ouai", like you'd say yeahhh in English... (not yes) the correct French way to say "oui" is actually quite short (open your mouth from left to right in an exagerated fashion when pronouncing the W as when saying the English "We"
@Holte, it's actually pronounced as Chuuu(tsjoe)-poo-oo ... LOL
