It's Mot (rhymes with hot). Actually it's difficult to type a pronunciation because I don't know if you have an accent, LOL! I find a lot of Americans say hat instead of hot!

But then again, many Americans "warsh" their clothes.....and "axs" questions. :-)

Patti, only if you're from the midwest or NYC.

Yes...but....those in the midwest are still considered Americans, aren't they? As for those from NYC....well...that's debatable. LOL!

This has become like "Who's on first?"
It's Mot (like in hot not hat)- what happened to Ma?
I have an accent but when I read I hear a standard North American accent (like the newscasters, in general, except sometimes one will say, strangely, ruff for roof instead of rueff).

Aren't the vowels all pronounced as they are for the same IPA (Internat'l Phonetic Alphabet) symbols? Pretty much just like Spanish vowels and diphthongs.

Cat - the first way you wrote it is correct (mah-tah-ee-va) where mah = ma and tah = ta. I do agree with Barbi that locals will sometimes blend vowel sounds together but if you stick with your first written pronunciation you will be fine.
