During the "Christmas" discussion, didn't someone also write in about a female tourist who met a man at a party, rebuffed his advances, and then later that night he broke into her pension? It's been so long ago (and was both so weird and so sad) that I'm not remembering all of it. The original poster didn't make a lot of sense (and I was surprised she'd come to this board to seek help), but then again, it sounds like whatever happened, she was very traumatized by it.

The whole "no eye contact" and "word will get out that you have a husband" info is very interesting.

On a sort-of related note, we honeymooned in Fiji, and most (with one exception) of the native Fijian men I met there would not speak to me, even when I was standing next to my husband. If I asked a question, they would look right at my husband and address the general topic of the question. I was modestly dressed (b/c I'd read that the culture was more conservative) but nothing prepared me for being invisible. The Indian-Fijian men acted like I was a normal person, though.

I asked a lot of people on Huahine about the attack on the woman on Huahine several years ago, but no one had ever heard of it.

I noticed the road crews in Moorea and Tahiti would be wearing flip flops, a bad habit I picked up and was doing that just yesterday: welding and grinding in flip flops and boardshorts.
