I would like to bring some alcohol to mix with some fruits or something else native to Bora Bora or popular there.

1. What types of mixed tropical drinks are popular there?
2. What type of alcohol should I bring?
3. What will I need to buy there?

Thanks.

In my experience, mixed tropical drinks in French Polynesia are really disappointing (the ones the resorts make) and really pricy so bringing your own alcohol is a great idea. You can get all kinds of good fruit juices from local stores or buy Tahiti Drink, a premixed rum and juice concoction that really is amazingly good.

Bring whatever alcohol you like mixed with juice. I've taken coconut rum (it's very good with any juice) and vodka, but you might prefer other liquors.

Definitely mix your own (buy liquor at the duty free and fruit juices at the markets) or drink Tahiti Drink. I have never ever had a good mixed cocktail in Tahiti. (You may want to bring your own recipes and a jigger.) Coke and regular sodas are readily available (although a little more expensive than juices) so if you prefer those as mixers you can find them. The local beer, Hinano, is very popular. I don't drink beer so I can't give a personal recommend, but my husband (and everyone else on this board) loves Hinano.

1. Why buy liquor at the duty free? Why not just buy from my local store and pack the liquor with all of my other stuff in my luggage?

2. If Tahiti Drink already includes Rum, do I need to bring more to add to it?Is it low in alcohol %?

Thanks.

Bringing booze in your checked luggage has several disadvantages.
1. Weight. Booze is heavy. You're only allowed 50 lbs. on Intl. carrier and 44 lbs. on Inter-island.
2. Booze needs to packed really well or all your clotheds will wind up reeking of whatever flavor you packed. More weight.

Tahiti drink by itself will knock your socks off. It's very strong. No need to add any more rum.

Hi DenverJoe,

1. Whether I buy the booze before leaving for Bora Bora or if I buy it at the airport, I will still have the weight problem with the Inter-island 44 lbs restriction? Right? This is the part that is confusing me.

2. Any idea how expensive Tahiti drink is? Is it all the same or are the better places to get it?

Thanks!

If you buy it at LAX Duty Free, you can carry it on...even on the inter-island flights.

Soooo...choose where to get it depending on how much weight you will have in your luggage. I pack very light, so I am never anywhere near the weight limits and often pack some from home.

Obviously it will be a bit less to buy it at home and pack it than to buy it at Duty Free and carry it on. Just be very careful packing. I like to seal the bottles in my vacuum seal a meal. That way if the bottle does break or leak, you don't have booze all over your clothes. Also wrap it in some of your clothes in the mid part of your luggage to help protect it.

Tahiti Drink comes in a liter size milk carton. It's around $12-16 US depending on what store you get it at. I think it also now comes in a 5 liter carton...only sold at some of the larger stores on Tahiti and Moorea. It's pretty strong stuff, I actually cut mine with pineapple juice.

If you drink wine or beer, buy it there....the prices in FP are fairly reasonable compared to the price of hard liquor. The only alcohol that is reasonably priced there in Tahitian Rhum....it's around $20-25 a bottle. Most other liquors are double or higher than what it costs at home.

I agree Patti. I drink the beer and the GREAT French wines that I can't get anywhere else. All the stores, even the little magasins, have a good selection of wine. At very reasonable prices.

Sorry for having to ask this, though I am still a bit confused.

1. If I buy booze at the LAX Duty Free, I will be able to bring the booze onto my carry on bag? I have never bought booze at the airport. And, I will be able to bring it on the inter-island flight?

2. However, even if I am bringing the booze onto the flight, it will still be weighed along with everything else I am bringing, right?

3. So I will not be able to get Tahiti Drink in Bora Bora? I will have a short stop over from LAX to Tahiti before I leave for Bora Bora. Is there a market close to the airport that I can get Tahiti Drink?

Thank you.

1. Yes you will be able to carry it on. At LAX, they will deliver your Duty Free purchase to you at your departure gate. Once in FP, you will be able to carry it on your flight. They are not near as strict with the no liquids on inter-island flights. ALTHOUGH...they are on your flight back to the US, so don't try to have any liquid carry ons on your way back.

2. It may or may not be included in the weight of your carry ons. They usually don't pay attention to your carry ons or even ask to weigh them unless it looks like you are trying to carry on a lot of stuff or something large.

3. Yes you will be able to buy it there at the markets. But so far as I know they may not have the large size containers there yet. Do be aware the stores do not sell alcohol on Sunday.
