News from Tahiti Presse this morning (only applies to tickets purchased after July 1):
Air Tahiti Nui has new baggage policy Posted on Thursday, July 28th, 2011 at 11:52 am Share
Due to increased operating and fuel costs, Air Tahiti Nui is implementing a new baggage policy, effective for all tickets issued after July 1st 2011. However, carry-on baggage allowance will remain unchanged.
Checked baggage policies will change as follows:
Per person, one free checked bag of 50lbs / 23kg for economy passengers and 70lbs / 32kg for business and first class passengers.
Charge for second piece applicable: From USA & Canada to French Polynesia, Europe, Africa and Middle East: USD 75.00, All other destinations USD 100.00. From French Polynesia to USA & Canada: XPF 7,000. From Europe, Africa and Middle East to USA & Canada: EUR 75.
Changes in policies for through checked (interline) baggage:
• Passengers with two separate connecting tickets, will be required to claim and re-check bags at connecting cities and pay individual airlines' applicable fees.
• Through-checked baggage between two different airlines will only be possible if all flights are issued on the same ticket and an interline baggage agreement exists, in accordance with IATA resolution 302.
• Consequently, for the passenger's convenience, it is recommended that all flights be issued on one ticket using Air Tahiti Nui add-ons provided with your net contracts.
• Any published domestic airfare in conjunction with Air Tahiti Nui published fares. In this case, the sales discount commission will be applied.

Oh that sucks about the different airlines having to be on the same ticket. That pretty much means you HAVE to use a travel agent to do the ticketing.....you can't do it yourself. :-(
I guess it wouldn't too much of an issue for me personally, cause I normally use SouthWest, which doesn't have a baggage agreement anyway.

I have Delta which has an agreement, but that I know of, I don't know how to get it all on one ticket.
When I have called, they have said that I need to get my ticket on ATN.
So does that mean I pay the baggage fee on Delta and then pay on ATN making it about $100pp?

I think to have it all on one ticket a travel agent has to do the booking.

I normally use a travel agent because a) they've gotten me better prices than I can get on the internet and b) I'm terrified I'll book a ticket on the wrong day when so many flights start or end near midnight!

really OW? I have always been afraid that I will goof it up,too, but I do it on the net because I did not know that a travel agent would only do flights.
That's good to know. Thanks

Sure, they'll do just flights (mine charges a small fee and still saves me money over internet prices). I usually only use a travel agent going somewhere like FP where the flights arrive or leave close to midnight. My biggest fear is midnight exactly---which day is it part of?

Holte,
You just pay the baggage fee on Delta; ATN still sends your first bag free. It's only a fee for the second bag.
If you get a Delta-branded American Express card, your first bag goes free on Delta too.

I had their credit card. I am done with that though.
The $95 pp fee is not worth what you get for the card, I feel. Lots of places won't even take AmEX.

I agree about the $95 fee, but it pays for itself after four flights a year with one free checked bag each flight @ $25! Also, you get extra mileage points when you use it to book your flights, AND can book your ATN flights on it too, on the same itinerary, so maybe you want to reconsider the fee if you are going again within the next year, given the changes in the ATN baggage policy. Check www.flyertalk.com under the Delta subtopic on "Miles & Points" to see if they are having any promotions right now for re-enrolling for the card and getting extra points for that. (I've been out of the "loop" on FT for about a month so can't give you any current links.)
