Wow! Sevenseas, and Holte, what great info. Thanks a million.

Thanks Holte for the detail. I will print this out. Looks like at least a day, maybe 2 of being out and about the island with a car. Plenty of potential snorkeling opportunities as well as many sightseeing and meal options.

What about a guided tour? Have read about them. Are they worth most of a day?

I am now leaning toward the Te Tiare, but would definately take in Relais Mahana area for snorkeling.

In the "Hidden Tahiti" guidebook, as well as Lonely Planet, there are warnings regarding the car break-in thing. "Hidden Tahiti" seems to blame it on the increase in surfers (?)

At any rate, I think I need at least 5 days on Huahine. It is getting very exciting.

I do not think it's the increase in surfers. I think it's opportunity and lack of employment.

Yes, the guided the tours are good. You get a nice bit of history with it. You will go to a vanilla place and the eels, I imagine. I forgot about the fish traps. Tours are good because you learn things you wouldn't know otherwise.

I think you get a half day.

What tours are there? I forget the names of them so if you ask, people will be able to weigh in on the choices.

We had a 1/2 day with (I think) Huahine Explorer (?). It was very educational and it was nice to have someone else drive. Unfortunately, we went on a rainy day and the tour was in French (because a young woman we met in the back of the 4x4 told the driver she would translate for us...but it's hard to keep up with him so we missed a lot between her translation and what I was understanding).
