Why does that not suprise me. Everybody is on the gravy train. And they want independence from France? Where are they going to get the money to survive?

Thanks for the inside info, Poehere. Do you have links to other websites with local news? Tahiti presse is the only one I know.

wow. I was so happy that there was a place for people to go with the issues of rape, etc.
Why is the govt trying to shut it down? I would think it is a major need.

Update today from Tahiti Presse: ............ The French Polynesian government confirmed Monday its decision to close down Tahiti's unique press agency Tahitipresse.
The decision has been announced by French Polynesia Vice-President Antony Geros who is also in charge of communication.
Geros told the Tahitipresse board of trustees the government needed to cut spendings.
He claimed a news agency could be done by private investors instead.
This decision came after the French Polynesian Assembly voted last August a vast program to cut spendings in Tahiti's administration.
The program included Tahitipresse but also many other public establishments which should either close or merge.
The closure should be effective on Jan. 1, 2012, but plans to continue the news service with Tahiti Nui Television still have to be discussed.
Some private investors could also be interested by Tahitipresse and its well-known website.
