Hi everyone! I am considering Vahine Island for our honeymoon. This appeals to me because from what I have read it is less touristy and more intimate. However, we were thinking of spending 2-3 nights here and then 2-3 nights on another island. What island would you recommend? We were thinking Bora Bora but it is SO expensive and not sure if it is 'worth it'.
Huahine looks nice too but I have read some bad things about the resort...not sure if these are unfounded or not.

Te tiare...read that it is overpriced for the quality (and read some scary things...but not sure if those are all true!). is there somewhere else on huahine that you would recommend? basically...we want to go somewhere that is really nice/beautiful but not super touristy.

slg47, Please explain what you read about Te Tiare being overpriced and that there are scarey things........Most reviews here and on 2 other forum venues have very favorable reviews of Te Tiare and the island of Huahine.
We've stayed at Te Tiare almost once a year since it opened in 1999 and have only wonderful memories of the place. The over-the- water bungalows there are about the best value in all FP. Food is great to our tastes and the island of Huahine is so beautiful and peaceful. The staff members at Te Tiare are reflective of the residents of Huahine: a little shy in the beginning but warm and friendly and helpful.

that is good to hear! I think it would be perfect for our honeymoon and usually I take the reviews on tripadvisor with several grains of salt. I re-read tripadvisor and it seems that te tiare in general gets great reviews.
here is the sample of one of the bad ones...but really after re-reading it seems that some of these people are just out to complain! I think when you read something horrible though it just sticks in your mind "musty sheets that were stained from menstruating" is one... "Staying in one of these rooms is barely one step above camping (which is ok, but not on your honeymoon and not when you are paying thousands of dollars to get to this island). The multiple holes in the roof (the place where the roof meets the walls) will not allow you’re a/c to cool, will keep everything permanently damp and smelling moldy and will make you hear every noise outside as if it was happening inside your room (which can be annoying at best and somewhat disconcerting in the middle of night). In addition, be prepared to share your room and nice deck with the multiple wasps and insects that make your roof their home. If you have not gotten the point yet, I will sum up my description of the rooms here by saying (without exaggerating) that I have stayed at nicer and more comfortable motel rooms in truck stops in the US than our deep over the water bungalow #34 at Te Tiare. If this is the best accommodations the island has to offer, I would hate to see the others...."
since this is our honeymoon of course I want it to be nice! I also imagine this will be our only trip out to this area of the world since we do not have a lot of $$ but were gifted a nice sum for spending on our honeymoon...basically if we are spending the $$ I want to make sure it is worthwhile :)
if we do do huahine and tahaa, would we take a flight from papeete to huahine, then flight from huahine to bora bora (or raiatea?), and then boat from bora bora to tahaa? does this sound right?

I wonder who wrote that horrible review? Very strange. Vaitape knows the resort so I would go with what she has to say.
You would fly from Huahine to Tahaa and then take a boat.
There is a new resort on Huahine, but the rooms are not on the water. The rooms look fabulous. There is a great beach right in front and a pool. It's just that the rooms are not on the water.

I think, too, some people have never been to the tropics. We saw many geckos in our bungalows in FP, but they keep the insect population down (the only insect I've seen in a bungalow was ants when we left food out). There are gaps in the many roofs (not the kind that would let rain in, but ones to help ventilation). Seriously, some people should just stay home and not travel to places that aren't the US (I'm talking about the person who wrote that report, not you)! Believe me, Te Tiare would not be "one step up from camping." We actually stay in places like that, LOL--but that resort wouldn't be one of those.

thanks oldwife :) geckos are fine...really all we are looking for is nice scenery, nice bungalow (does not have to have the same amenities as the plaza hotel but needs to have a clean bed/bathroom), and good food.

slg47: You would fly from Huahine to Raiatea and then take a boat to Tahaa. I think you'll be just fine at Te Tiare. Chef Jean-Fred and his staff are terrific. I think you'll be happy iwth the menu he offers. Let us know what you decide.
