Welll.....I think something obviously did happen to this man. BUT...I don't think it was cannibals. He may have died in an accident or been killed in a drunken fight or something and the guy may have tried to hide the body by chopping it up and burning it. BUT...I think the cannibalism part is a bit of a stretch....maybe a bit of journalistic sensationalism...heck, that never happens, huh?
I guess we will find out the true story eventually.

If there was cannibalism, I'd say it was due to the attacker having a mental illness rather than a continuing traditional practice. It's not like this doesn't happen in other countries.

That is what I was thinking Old Wife. Think Ed Gein and Jeffrey Dahmer. Some kind of psychotic breakdown.

It came out huh... well will all due respect for the victim who got cut up and burned (they're awaiting DNA results), nobody really knows what happened as there is only the story told by the woman. Locally people are trying to reason, why would the hunter have let escape the woman, she being the only witness and haivng taken pics of him prior to them going hunting... how could she have come out by herself from a place that is a very very tough hike for anyone not familiar with the area... how dit the hunter meet up with them in the morning, him being from Taiohae where they met the evening before, as this particular valley is only reachable by foot or by boat... some are even saying it may be an insurance stunt, it being easy to take out a dental frame and throw it in the fire...
lots of speculation but a terrible story whichever way the truth will eventually come out.

Ah, an interesting twist (or many)! There's always more to the story than newspapers put out (in fact, newspapers usually have factual mistakes in them--I've seen that first-hand). I figure at least half of what I read is true, but you can never tell which part that is.

From Tahiti Presse today: ..................... Chief prosecutor denies reports of cannibalism Posted on Tuesday, October 18th, 2011 at 4:52 pm
Prosecutor Jose Thorel said there is no evidence that could lead anybody to talk about cannibalism in the case of a German tourist in the Marquesas.
Several media in Germany and England have recently said that the man could have been eaten by his Marquesan guide.
The prosecutor denied such reports and said this was not part of his investigation.
The 40-year-old German Stefan Ramin arrived in the Marquesas a few days ago.
He anchored his catamaran near the island and went hunting with a Marquesan guide.
The French gendarmerie is investigating in some parts of the island.
Human remains have been found in one of the most remote valley of Nuku Hiva.
It has yet to be confirmed, however, that these remains are the ones of the German tourist.
The small community of Nuku Hiva is under shock. Nuku Hiva inhabitants say foreign media reports talking about cannibalism are unfair and biased. .........................

Honestly...until proven otherwise...speculation of cannibalism is just ridiculous and incredibly damaging to the tourism of an area that is already hard hit.
But hey...it's a great sensationalistic headline...so lets print it! It'll sell lots of papers and magazines! To hell with the damage and repercussions it might cause! As long as we make our money! ...I HATE journalism these days!

News yesterday afternoon from friends who live on Nuku Hiva is that the hunter may still be alive; authorities have found a note from him in a hunter's cabin apologizing for his actions, and police are now searching the bush for him.
