Thanks so much Patti. Which is best, change them here in AZ, US or when I get to Tahiti?

It's getting to be a bit more difficult to change them there. So I'd suggest changing here through Wells Fargo. You can do it online. Their exchange rate isn't bad.

Be sure to call your credit card first to determine if they handle the transaction as a purchase or a cash advance. I purchased money through wells fargo and my Amex treated it as a cash advance which resulted in some significant fees. In my case, it would have been cheaper to exchange at LAX.

My credit card (Capitol One) treated it as a purchase. This info is on the Wells Fargo site, under the FAQs:
"Will this purchase be charged as a cash advance on my credit or debit card? Online transactions are processed by Wells Fargo as a miscellaneous purchase, and are normally posted as a purchase on your card statement. Wells Fargo does not assess a cash advance or other transaction fee related to a credit or debit card transaction. However, your card issuer may independently assess a cash advance or other transaction fee which could be included on your card statement. Please check with your card issuer regarding any fees."
