In August im going to the FP and then Im on the final stage of choosing the quote I like the most, not only from a cost but also from compelling proposition points of view.
We're not divers (we're only amateurs in terms of snorkeling) and we're only slightly on the cultural side (just as a mix in order not to get bored of sun and beach).
Having said this I've the following proposals in hands, and budget has been blown already for any of these so I need to stck to 10 nights:
- Tahaa (5) and Bora Bora (5) (at Tahaa and going on an excursion to Raiatea I could get the true FP experience)
- Moorea (3), Tahaa (3) and Bora Bora (4)
- Huahine (5) and Bora Bora (5)
- Moorea (3), Huahine (3) and BoraBora (4)
Mapiti has also been refereed to me as the dark horse...
Manihi or Tikehau or Rangiroa have not been recommended because we're not divers and there's no really "point on going there" I've been told.
What do you guys think? If we want to go off the beaten track wouldnt the combination
- Tahaa (5) and Bora Bora (5) (at Tahaa and going on an excursion to Raiatea I could get the true FP experience)
be the best one as Moorea, although a beautiful island, then 3 days there in August with some jetlag, wouldnt be the right island to unwind and relax and as we're also not that much into tours around the island, etc.?
Many thanks,

I would not do any island for 3 days. Too, too short.
Not much going on in Tahaa.
Moorea would be good as the last one as you are close to Tahiti and have the ferry option as a return.
Maupiti is not one I would choose for more than a day excursion.
I would probably do a Bora Bora -Moorea as Bora Bora is the dream for everyone and Moorea has a lot to do, relatively speaking.
10 days may seem to be a long time, but with packing up and waiting at airports, you lose a lot of quality time, as much as I love the Polynesian airports.

In August, peak time, would you not go to Tahaa since you could also do Raiatea which has a lot of culture and therefore you'd prefer Moorea?

Kind of confusing, if you're not divers/snorklers and don't like tours around the island... what are you looking for then in terms of activities or spending your time??
FYI the Tuamotu's is not just a diving place, it is a part of Polynesia where one finds still true authentic Polynesian hospitality and tranquility... and very much off the beaten track sort of there being very limited infra structures present...
In any case with 10 days best to stick to 2 islands to avoid losing transfer time, which would be a shame having come from so far.
Quite frankly I don't see much difference in staying a few days in a resort in Moorea or Huahine, since you're not into tours or anything. These are not crowded places out here, far from that, it is not like Hawaïi, we have 150.000 visitors a year... visiting various islands....
If you want the best of both worlds here, so to speak, 5 days BB Thalasso and 5 days Kia Ora Rangiroa (and Sauvage) would be an unforgetable experience IMHO, since you're talking about "off the beaten track". You can drive around the islands like Taha'a, Raiatea and Huahine, Moorea in 1 day so I don't understand what you would get out of a 1 day "off the beaten track experience"? Whereas if you'd stay at the Kia Ora Sauvage, you'd experience the total Robinson Cruso experience without wanting for whatever as it is well taken care off.

Fair enough - what I meant to say is that we're not looking for islands that are only recommendable for those who are divers/prof snorkelers, etc. We like excursions but we're not a group thatdoes that more than 2 or 3 times in such a 10 days trip
We're looking for islands where we wont get "that" touristic feeling, where we've outstanding beaches and sceneries and where we've some culture and traditional FP feeling just around the corner :-)

Well I truly think you should check out the Kia Ora , you could do the snorkling in the Tiputa pass which is totally awesome, "taste" the atoll life and spend a few days at the Sauvage, the other side of the atoll, just a few people, beautiful lagoon etc; Maybe Google some and see what you think.
In the Tuamotu's the scenery is the lagoon... whereas in the Society islands it is the mountains... maybe someone else can chip in with other info...

So Rangiroa and Bora Bora and then 2 different hotels at Rangiroa? Why dont you fancy Le Tahaa with excursions around the island plus Raiatea?

LOL, I do fancy le Taha'a, it is a very nice place... just trying to point out the differences...
In fact the Kia Ora offers their "regular" resort on the main islet of Rangiroa and an evasion if you wish to a tiny islet across the lagoon where is the Kia Ora Sauvage...
Have a look also at the tahitiguide.com website, it may help you as well in checking out the different islands

LOL if you were tending towards Tahaa and BB, you should do that and not look further. Besides it would save quite some $$$$ in terms of flights.
I was merely pointing out that the atolls are not just for divers...
