I know this has been asked a lot before, but here goes again. My previous trips to FP have been in Sept, Aug and Mar. The Sep and Aug trips had some weather issues, particularly wind, which I find worse than rain. Our trip in March, I don't remember any weather related issues, except for the occasional squall. So this time, our trip will probably be in January, late Jan to be exact. My target islands are Maupiti, Huahine, and Rangiroa, and maybe Raiatea. Any comments would be appreciated.

I've been 6 times (about 9 weeks total time) around late Jan to mid Feb...we've had maybe 3 totally rainy days, maybe a dozen off and on rainy days, some quick off and on showers days, some totally sunny days...AND...a cyclone (in a pear tree).:-) Wind was only an issue for us for the 2.5 days when the cyclone came through. It is more humid and a little bit warmer that time of year...but it's never been an issue for us.

we always go at that time. I like it because it is hot. I like to swim.
I was there 2 1/2 months starting in Feb until the end of April last Feb. The weather was great and started cooling in the end of April.
Not much rain, but they had a drought last year. The other years we went, only one time was there a bit of rain in Feb. But usually it is off and on rain. Have not experienced big wind yet--knock on wood.

Hi wannago, the big winds are usually August Sept maybe some part of July, it is called that Mara'amu coming in from SE and very strong.
This year the weather has been off like, I can not recall if we had rain in Jan/Feb, but I can tell you that we've had very very severe draught. The rain came last week, horrendous and not common for this time of year, like a whole week causing lots of trouble but it did fill the water tanks. It has gone now.... November thru March/april is rainy season and cyclone period, they've announced our changes at getting one at 25%... who knows, climate seems to change though. Hope this helps

We're going in late January, too, wannago (just Moorea, though). I hope we have good weather, but we'll roll with whatever we get. Our previous 2 trips were in mid-to-late November (a total of 5 weeks) and the weather was very good then (a few rainy-ish days, but not many in a row). I'm hoping that time of year is similar to late January/early February (they're all part of the rainy season). What I do know--you can't do anything about the weather, it can rain in the dry season and be sunny in the wet season, and rain in paradise is still paradise!
I'm with you on the wind. I hate wind way more than rain (or snow!). I'd like to know where the least-windy places are in the world (especially in Canada so I can retire there).

Duluth,, Minnesota. Wind is usually not a problem.
It is beautiful here. Of course, we don't have amenities like health care, but you could drive to Thunder Bay.

Hmm. I wonder if Thunder Bay is non-windy? It's a beautiful city (if a bit chilly).

Thanks for your thoughts everyone. Looks like Jan-Feb for me, but still have to nail down some family timing things. (Is it true that Kia Ora is looking at $1,000 per night?)
Yes, wind is a real bother. Eastern TN and central AK are good non-windy places.http://www.usatoday.com/weather/resources/askjack/wawind.htm
Here's a list of average wind by US city. It's ten years old, but might be interesting. list.http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/climate/online/ccd/avgwind.html

There is a fine line for me with wind. I like a good, stiff breeze to keep things cool and the mosquitos at bay. But once white caps start whipping up...it's too much.
