What is up with Air Tahiti? Besides being a monopoly, did they cover their aircraft seats in 24 Karat gold? I was looking at flights to either Raivavae or Nuku Hiva. Raivavae was over $1200 USD and Nuku Hiva $1400 USD. That's as much as a r/t ticket from LAX. I hope residents get a break. No wonder everyone goes to Moorea. They can take the ferry. Anyone know of a way to get a cheaper ticket to either of those destinations? That or I'll never see either one.

Is that price for 1 or 2 people? In Jan Prince's book she says the RT airfare to NH is 59460...that's around $700 US isn't it? So for 2 people it's $1400.

I figure if we ever get to Nuku Hiva, it will be by taking a sea trip on the Aranui. Have you considered that? Mind you, they don't go to Raivavae.

Problem is Joe...price is set by demand..and competition. There is no competition on the route...and there is probably not a HUGE demand on the route...so they can basically charge whatever they want.
Heck, a few years ago the price to Fakarava (which is much closer than NH) was about $1000 for the 2 of us.

Nuku Hiva is also expensive for residents! My local friends regularly pay between $600 and $800 for a round-trip.
One way to save, Joe, is to reach age 60 and get the Marama Carte on Air Tahiti. But even then, you must book the ticket in person in FP, not online, which pretty much means a year in advance... Even then, it's pricey! R and I paid about $500 each r/trip from Papeete to Nuku Hiva last summer, and we had to book it in person six months in advance to get that rate.
You might seriously consider a trip on the Aranui 3 to the Marquesas, which is supposed to be a fantastic cruise!

Oh yes, the Aranui voyage is fantastic. Pago would do it again if he had time.

DJ, if it makes you feel any better, we paid almost $1800 USD for our airpass, Tahiti, Huahine, Moorea, BB and Tikehau - albeit it was flying over the Xmas holiday season.
So before we even left Oz we had spent over $4K on flights!!

When we went 4 years ago, our flights from here to FP plus our Air Tahiti (Moorea, Huahine and Fakarava) flights cost us $4500. But it's well worth it!

If they made the air travel portion of your trip more affordable they would probably have more tourists coming. Most people don't spend $4k to $5k on their total vacation. Much less just on airfare alone. Or am I way off base here?
